McMillan to represent Liberals again Farrelton beef farmer defeats two other candidates to capture Pontiac nomination WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor PONTIAC • Cindy Duncan McMillan has done it again. The beef farmer from Farrelton, Que.again defeated strong competition in retaining her position as the Liberal candidate in the next federal election. She will face the task of trying to unseat two-term Pontiac Member of Parliament Lawrence Cannon, Conservative, in the next federal election.“1 won because I had more people vote for me and I had more people vote for me because I know more people in this riding,” said Duncan McMillan matter of-factly on Monday morning.Duncan McMillan, 52, said she believed the connections she has gained in her decades of work locally led to her win, explaining that Maniwaki’s George Lafontaine was Cindy Duncan-McMillan only well-known in one section of the riding and Aylmer's Greg Fergus did not have well-developed contacts in Pontiac.“I had worked very hard and I didn’t want to see that work dissipate,” said Duncan McMillan. This time, she was faced with the task of defeating two first-time candidates, Greg Fergus of Aylmer and Georges Lafontaine of Maniwaki.Fergus is the former national director of the Liberal party who had previously done consultation work with a number of prominent Liberal cabinet ministers.Lafontaine is a prominent journalist and author who previously owned a newspaper and radio station in the Maniwaki area and Had also worked for a pair of members of national assembly in Gatineau in the past.To win the nomination the first time around, Duncan McMillan defeated Ernie Mahoney, an Ottawa lawyer whom some believed had been handpicked for the Pontiac nomination. In a departure from having just one voting location in the riding, the Liberal party opted for one primary location in Gracefield where the candidates delivered speeches and also two satellite locations, one in Shawville and the other in L'Ange Gardien.Voting by party members — there were 1,074 eligible voters in all — took place between 2:30 p.m.and 4 p.m.at the three locations before a winner was announced. No tallies were released and upon losing Fergus moved to make the vote unanimous, a motion that was accepted.Party organizer Jean-Bernard Villemaire said the total number of votes cast were unavailable.“I suspect a good majority of the membership chose to cast their vote,” he said.Duncan McMillan said her priority now becomes preparing for the election. Please see LIBERALS on page three Bristol man honoured by Ayrshire Canada CINDY BLAIS Equity Reporter BRISTOL • Ayrshire Canada has awarded Ronald MacKechnie with an honourary life membership.Ronald MacKechnie has shown his dedication to his craft through hard work and a lot of determination.MacKechnie started showing Ayrshires when he was five years old while his family went to fairs. The number of farmers in the Pontiac region with Ayrshires has diminished according to MacKechnie.“There aren’t as many farms as there used to be,” MacKechnie added.Even though MacKechnie is now 86 years old, his passion for his farm has never changed.“My son took over the family farm about ten years ago now but I still help out when I can,” MacKechnie said. This year alone MacKechnie helped his son cut and bale hay for their farm.Their farm spans out many acres and MacKechnie cut and baled about 300 acres during this year alone.MacKechnie has helped out with the development of the Ayrshire breed.By selling some of his cattle and retaining their genes MacKechnie allowed the breed to expand. Some of his bred cattle can be found all over Canada.“I’ve visited some of my cattle in Saskatchewan,” MacKechnie added.MacKechnie has also traveled the world for his beloved breed.“I’ve traveled in many places to attend conferences like Kenya, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Finland,” MacKechnie said. These conferences happen every four years and happen all over the world. The next World Ayrshire Conference is to be held in South Africa. The conferences allow breeders to get together in order to discuss techniques and talk about ways to keep the Ayrshire breed.“Some people actually sell some of their herds at these conferences,” MacKechnie said.Even though MacKechnie would love to be able to keep going to the conferences many times he finds it difficult.“I don’t get to go to many of the conferences anymore unfortunately, I’m not as young as I used to be,” MacKechnie added. The prestigious award has been awarded periodically but for MacKechnie it was a complete surprise.“I didn’t know I was being given this membership but I am quite honoured,” MacKechnie said.MacKechnie has been breeding for as long as he can remember and has passed along his knowledge to future generations.“I’ve shown my son a lot of things,” MacKechnie added. He is also a 4-H leader which allows him to pass on some of his knowledge.MacKechnie has also judged for numerous competitions in Quebec, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.Bonnieshade Ayrshires, MacKechnie’s family farm, has received many awards over the years.“We were the champions in 2005 and in 2006 at the Royal Winter Fair,” MacKechnie added.Ronald is the second generation in his family to breed Ayrshires. There are now three generations in his family.During his travels MacKechnie was fortunate enough to visit different herds from all around the world.“I’ve had a chance to visit herds in all of the Canadian provinces,” MacKechnie said.“I’ve also seen some herds on other continents.” When asked whether he found helping around the farm more difficult MacKechnie responded “It’s at times easier because I usually get the tractor to work with and the tractors nowadays are all automatic.” Apple appreciation Wlltxir McLean, The Equity Clarendon’s Marissa Lang may only be two years old, but she already appreciates a good apple as she showed during Coronation Hall Cider Mill’s open house on Sunday.Coronation Hall’s successes on display at open house WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor BRISTOL • So how do you like them apples? The owners and staff of Coronation Hall Cider Mill in Bristol like them just fine, especially considering the increasing growth and success of their fledgling business.Their work was put on display for all the Outaouais region to see as Coronation Hall was selected as one of three farms in the region to be showcased as part of the Open House on Quebec Farms. The public was welcomed to see just what Coronation Hall was all about with information, demonstrations of their processes and of course lots of apples in sight everywhere. The Quebec Ministry of Agriculture (MAPAQ) and Union of Agricultural Producers (UPA) was also on hand with kids’ colouring games, an apple identification game and lots of informational charts.“It was very worthwhile,” said Greg Graham, co-owner of Coronation Hall Cider Mill.Graham used a manual press to demonstrate how apple cider is made and also discussed his Bristol apple orchard and how the processes work there. He has 14 varieties of apples in all.“We got a lot more people than we expected,” said Graham, noting that many of the hundreds of visitors were from various parts of Gatineau and other sections of the Outaouais.Coronation Hall’s involvement in the day came when their local UPA member contacted the mill to gauge their interest. The Grahams jumped on board.“We did most of the work for the day but the UPA did give us some info,” he said.Celebrating their one year anniversary this fall, the mill has been earning greater recognition both locally and nationally. The first and fifth place winners of a popular apple pie contest at the Ottawa SuperEx were Bristol women who work for Coronation Hall.Graham said sales of apple pies have jumped since the contest.“Oh, definitely, we've been selling a lot more since then,” he said. Also, Our Canada magazine had a two-page spread in their August/September issue with an article and photos featuring the cider mill. The story was written by Coronation Hall co-owner Shawn Graham.“We’ve been getting lots of calls from across the country since then,” he said. Finally, the mill is awaiting their final paperwork to be permitted to sell alcoholic, or hard, cider.Greg Graham said the mill has already produced English cider, which is about six per cent alcoholic, but permission is still being awaited from the province.“We’re hoping to get the permits soon, but I don’t know if that will be next week or four months from now,” he said.“We’ve just been waiting.” Woman sent to hospital following collision CINDY BLAIS Equity Reporter LUSKVILLE • An accident on Saturday in Luskville sent a woman to hospital.A not take part in the run itself.“We had some new people but we lost some of our old clientele as well," said Petty.“We’re hoping to pick it up at the student run next week.” Petty Page 2 l'HE EXàLlTY Wednesday, September 16, 2009 Panthers dominate home opener WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor PONTAC • There's something different about this year's Pontiac High School football team. This st son, the Panthers can win After tears of struggling to compete with larger i hool- possessing larger athletic budgets, Pontiac opened its home schedule on Thursday with a dominant 36-0 victory over Svmmes Pomiac was bigger, faster and far more skilled as they busted big run after big run to t ruise to the easy victory. The Panthers were up 14-0 after one quarter and 34-0 at the half with Symmes never once threatening to score. The scoring was spread out on a number of powerful runs Andrew Cahill scored two rushing touchdowns and Jon Toupin also had a pair of majors.Matt Lafleur had a rushing score of his own and Josh Bourgeau converted four of his five extra point attempts in the first half.Symmes looked confused throughout the game during their season opener, often finding themselves with too few players on the field and plays winding up a muddled \\ mess.By contrast, the Panthers executed well with a variety of simple rushing plays to gain big chunks of yards at a time. The win evened the Panthers’ record at 1-1.The team lost its opener on the road to Haute de Gatineau, 30-12.The Panthers next home game is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.against Hadley. The change in league format will undoubtedly help the Panthers' chances this year.Rather than all of the Outaouais teams playing in one league, this season there are twro divisions, one for stronger, larger schools and the other for smaller, less powerful schools.PHS will play a six-game schedule in the ‘B’ division with three other schools while the ‘A’ division consists of five schools playing an eight-game schedule. In past years, Pontiac had struggled to keep up with their larger school counterparts, often losing by large margins and earning just one win in the past three seasons.Thursday’s performance gives hope that this year’s team could compete for their league championship for the first time. The league uses a mixture of Canadian and American football rules. The teams play four downs but use a 110-yard field and have 12 players on the field at a time.Junior ‘B’s lose opener to Arnprior WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor PONTIAC • The -Pontiac Junior ‘B’s new season began the way last season ended — w-ith a loss to the Arnprior Packers. The Pontiacs lost their first game cf the 2009-2010 campaign 4-1 in Arnprior on Sunday evening, the same team that ousted the Junior ‘B’s in the first round of the playoffs last spring. The Junior ‘B’s play again on the road this Sunday against the Clarence Beavers before finally debuting at home on Friday, Sept.25 at 8 p.m.against Perth. In a departure from past seasons, the Pontiacs played just one exhibition game in this year’s pre-season.On Monday, Aug.31, the team travelled to Ottawa West and lost 3-2 to the defending Eastern Ontario Junior ‘B’ Hockey League champions in a game that was designed more for player development and evaluation rather than winning.Flyers on verge of finals berth WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor QUYON • The Quyon Fivers are one win away from reaching the league championship for the first time. The Flyers won game three of the best-of-five series 1-0 against Ottawa Team Easton on Tuesday, Sept.8 to take a two-to-one series lead.A win in either of the next two games would advance Quyon to the finals against the defending champion Stittsville 56ers.Game three was another tight affair with hits and runs at a premium, a trend that has developed throughout the series.Joe McCleary’s RBI single in the second inning drove in Joran Graham and provided the only run of the contest.Keeping the defense tight and with Drew Hathway providing another strong pitching performance, the run was the only one Quyon needed in earning the win.Hathway threw a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out 12.The hard luck losing pitcher was Brad Porter for Team Easton who conceded only two hits. There have been a total of just nine runs scored so far in the teams’ three games.Game four in Quyon was originally scheduled to take place in Thursday, but was rescheduled for yesterday evening instead.Game five, if necessary, would be a home game for Ottawa.Awaiting the winner is Stittsville, who powered past Manotick in their semi-final series, wanning all three games by increasingly large margins. The 56ers won game one 8-2, game two 12-5 and game three 9-0 to sweep the series.Their combined record in the league and playoffs this season is an outstanding 22 wins, one loss and two ties.McCleary out One serious blow to the Flyers’ chances is the loss of McCleary, who was injured last weekend and is out for the remainder of the playoffs.McCleary is both one of the team’s top players — his .347 batting average was among the league’s best — and most vocal leaders.OVERTIME I LUKE MURPHY Where are they now: John Rocker I’ve decided to start a new series, “Where Are They Now?”.Ever wonder what happens to professional athletes when they fall off the radar?I’m talking about those who, at one time, were the headliners of their sport, and then disappear, never to be heard from again.Of course today we have reality television, a possibility to give former stars another chance in the spotlight. There are a number of past athletes who were larger than life, but who disappeared from the public’s eye.I chose a handful to investigate, so every couple of weeks 111 write a short article on what they are doing now.I'm sure you have your own names, so feel free to drop me a line and give me your favorites to investigate.John Rocker is a retired Major League Baseball relief pitcher who was known more for his controversy than his pitching.Rocker’s best year statistically was 1999, and after becoming the Atlanta Braves’ full-time closer, he converted 38 saves and had an ERA of 2.49.But in June 2000, Rocker was demoted for threatening a reporter, and his career was never the same.A story published in the January 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated said that Rocker made a number of comments stemming from his experiences in New York City. From the interview, Rocker was accused of being racist, homophobic, and sexist.During the interview, Rocker spat on a toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, he supposedly referred to a black teammate as a “fat monkey”.Although Rocker later apologized, he continued to make controversial remarks. On June 29, 2000, Rocker appeared in front of 46,987 fans at Shea Stadium in NY for the first time since making the remarks.More than 700 police officers were on guard for the game and 300 press passes were given out.A limit on beer sales was imposed and a special protective cover was placed over the Braves’ bullpen.A videotaped apology from Rocker was shown on Shea Stadium's Jumbotron before the game, which was loudly booed. When Rocker pitched the eighth inning, he was booed, objects were thrown and a chant began. After the game, Rocker left the stadium in a black van trailed by three security vehicles. In 2001, Rocker was traded to the Cleveland Indians, and then later to the Texas Rangers. While with the Rangers, Rocker again made national headlines for bigotry after directing slurs towards other customers at a Dallas restaurant. He took the 2004 season off to recover from surgery, and in 2005 attempted an unsuccessful comeback when he signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. He retired later that year.Since retirement, Rocker appeared pn the Reality Show Pros vs.Joes, à program where retired professional athletes compete against amateurs. In late 2006, Rocker was interviewed by the popular sports blog, Deadspin, where he discussed his “Speak English” campaign, as well as his upcoming book, which has yet to be published. Also during the interview, Rocker verbally attacked his former Atlanta general manager, calling him “an imbecile,” and “a complete moron”.In March 2007, Rocker was implicated in a steroid ring.He admitted taking Human Growth Hormone, but only for medical reasons. As of 2008, Rocker sells real estate in Atlanta, Georgia. That’s my two cents. What do you think?Murphy is a former professional Carole St-Aubln.THE EQUITY Champion dart player Yves Chamberlain displays his natural skill at the dart board. The 55-year-old has been playing professionally for about 30 years.CAROLE ST-AUBIN Equity Reporter CAMPBELLS BAY • Yves Chamberlain has always fostered his competitive side Not only has the agile 55-year-old been at the top of his game as a top Canadian sandbag player and been a successful softball pitcher, but he's also had a 232 point average in bowling and has been playing darts professionally since the age of 26.Originally from Aylmer, Chamberlain and Jocelyne, his wife of 33 years, have opted to move away from the bustling city life to retire in Campbell’s Bay three years ago, But a quieter, simpler country lifestyle has not completely quelled his competitiveness. After taking a three-year break from competing, Chamberlain has made- a come back by making it to Team Quebec and is now qualifying to represent Team Canada at the World Masters competition in England. To qualify, one must come in first place at the regional competition the move on to the provincial level. The top four in Canada then move on to the World Masters.Chamberlain previously competed for the World Masters in 1993, 1998, and 2006.In 1995 he also competed at the Embassy World Championship in England, at the World Cup in Las Vegas in 1993, the 1995 World Cup Championship in Switzerland, as well as the 1996 Pacific Cup in Australia.Other title-wins include Quebec Champion five times, Canadian Champion in the 1998 National, and he also qualified as a National team member from 1989 to 1995.While earning a modest living as a self-employed upholsterer, Chamberlain also brought home a good sum of prize money while playing the dart competition circuit.“It was a second job.I would bring in about $18,000 to $20,000 a year, but I was playing every other weekend, and it was tiring,” he said.“People don’t realize how hard it is to be standing for hours on a concrete floor. It's hard on your legs and your back.” Chamberlain has traveled across Quebec, Ontario and the U.S.to compete in tournaments held in major cities such as Quebec, Montreal, St.Hyacinthe, Hamilton, Oshawa, Ottawa, Syracuse, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, and Atlantic City.“I won first place in almost all of these at some point, ” he said. One of his biggest competitors through the years has been John Park of Oshawa, whom Chamberlain said he would often meet and beat in the finals.“But these last few years I decided to leave him my place,” Chamberlain said with an impish grin.“Park has since moved on to England to become the 2008 World Champion,” he added.Though she accompanied him at a lot of these compe- tition and tournaments, Jocelyne told The Equity that it wasn’t easy to raise two children with her husband often gone.It required a lot of patience, she said, adding that it is to be expected when one is married to an athletic person.Chamberlain is not sure he will compete in the World Masters this year, however, because the cost of traveling is so high.“The National Dart Federation of Canada (NDFC) will only pay $750 for the flight. They used to pay everything. It will cost me at least $2,000 for this trip, and I’ve never had any sponsors so it gets expensive,” said Chamberlain.Though there are many variations to the game, the first-rate competitor explained that the 501-point game is the one played in these competitions. All the players begin with 501 pqints and must work their way down to end the game by hitting a double on the dart board. For example, if a player had 20 points remaining, hitting a double 10 would win the game.Once players near a cer- tain number of points they must calculate their ‘outs’ in order to leave themselves at least one throw at double points in order to go out and therefore win the game. Most players will have these out-combinations memorized, knowing exactly in what succession they must throw. When asked about the secret of his success Chamberlain answered, “I guess I’m just a natural.” If he was asked to give any tips on improving one’s skills, Chamberlain said they would be to simply start with a good stance and keep one’s arm at a perfect 90 degree angle.“Though everyone needs to develop a technique that works for them.” Playing darts, much like playing sandbags, which involves throwing sandbags at a target box, requires good hand-eye coordination.Chamberlain being offered on Saturday and Sunday in Starks Corners. The hunting course was being offered to anyone over the age of 12 who was interested in learning the do’s and don’t’s of hunting. Some of the key points from the two day course were rifle safety, preparing the kill for transport and what to do in an emergency situation. There were 44 people registered for the two day weekend course held in English.Another course will be available in French in Mansfield next week, where there are approximately 30 registered. The course is separated into two parts: there is the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, which is the federal part of the course. There is also the Introduction to Hunting With a Firearm, which is the provincial portion of the course. The federal portion or CSMAF was taught on Saturday while the provincial portion or ICAF portion was demonstrated on Sunday. In order to pass the course and receive the hunting license the students had to pass both a practical and Cindy Blais.THE EQUITY Game Warden Jean-Francois Thibeault and Jordan Lauin, 12, display the proper way of handling a firearm on Sunday during the two-day long hunting course.written exam.“Everyone needs to pass the provincial section of the exam with 70 per cent but the federal portion needs to be passed with 80 per cent,” said instructor Rodolphe La Salle. After taking the exam the students will not receive their result right away, if they have passed their examination they will receive their license in the mail. The two courses, the one the weekend and the one in Mansfield, are the last courses being offered before the hunting season.“We stop offering the courses between the 25th of September and the 25th of November since the Ministry of Natural Resources needs the game wardens to patrol,” La Salle said.During the course La Salle explained that every year a group of women get together for the Cerf Femme weekend. The Cerf Femme weekend is where only women gather to spend time together hunting deer.“The women learn how to do everything properly like carry their kills and clean them properly,” LaSalle added. At the end of the weekend, the women receive a gift for participating. One very important piece of information that was given during the course was that all hunters should be prepared for anything.SHAWVILLE FIGURE
