seems Fred may have saved one of his best parties for last.In a significant departure from a traditional funeral and reception, the ceremony and gathering afterwards for Fred Meilleur were celebratory, with laughs and smiling faces abound.“It was how he would have wanted it,” was the refrain echoed by many in attendance in Chapeau Saturday morning, where a light dnzzle fell upon the village in the hours leading up to the funeral held at St.Alphonsus Catholic Church but ceased almost immediately once the funeral service began.Mother Nature was seemingly let it be known that as sad as the day may have been to wish farewell to one of the Ottawa Valley’s most loved figures, it was still okay for the sunshine to peek through.Meilleur died in his home on Feb.2 after months of being in and out of hospital. At eighty-five years old, family members said in his final days he opted to remain in Chapeau rather than return for smother hospital visit. There were no seats available inside the church and the available standing room around St.Alphonsus’ perimeter was two-to-three people deep with those not wanting to miss Meilleur’s send-off into the next life.Celebrant Fr.Tim Moyle was upbeat throughout the service, noting Meilleur’s well-documented benevolence and community focus.“Could there have been a more appropriate day for Fred Meilleur to have died than on Groundhog’s Day?,’ asked Moyle.“This winter will for many of us seem longer because of Fred’s passing." After the hour-long ceremony, family members and close friends attended Meilleur’s burial, which took place at the parish cemetery immediately behind the church. The hat Meilleur often wore rested upon his casket throughout the burial service but was removed by Meilleur’s son, Peter, as it concluded.“I would never be man enough to wear my father’s hat,” said Peter later.“I just wanted to have a part of it.” A man named Jesus Christ This is one of the many tales about Meilleur that will likely be passed on for generations. It was told by Fr.Tim Moyle at Meilleur’s funeral.A man sat looking desolate outside Fred’s Hotel after being kicked out of the establishment one day when an American tourist saw him and, taking pity, asked his name.“Jesus Christ,” the man responded. The tourist told him that was ludicrous and that his name couldn’t possibly be Jesus Christ. He asked him again, “What’s your name?” “My name is Jesus Christ,” the man said again. After some argument between the two, the desolate man said he would prove to the tourist that his name was Jesus Christ. The desolate man led the tourist inside the hotel where Fred immediately spotted him and shouted: “Jesus Christ, are you in here again?” All who knew Meilleur were invited to Harrington Hall afterwards for what turned out to be a grand celebration of Meilleur and continued for hours. While some eyes were misty, smiles were aplenty and according to Meilleur’s daughter Anne, that’s the way he would have wanted it.“He didn’t want to be sad,” she said.“He said you have to take care of the living. We can remember those who passed but we have to honour those who are still alive. That’s what he was all about.” Meilleur ran the Chapeau hotel and Fred’s Steakhouse for 62 years, making the restaurant and bar one of the most famous in the Ottawa Valley. He was revered for his generosity, hospitality and ability to remember everything.Anne joked that her father was the first computer on Allumette Island.Fr.Moyle spoke of the giving nature of Meilleur and his wife, Helen, who died in 1995.The couple were always willing to lend a hand to anybody in need in the community, but always requested their assistance be kept quiet — they sought no recognition for what they had done.Meilleur faced his share of adversity including the death of his wife, the sudden death of his grandson, Marc and the death of his son, Rolland.Meilleur sold the hotel in 2003 and had been sick for the past few years, though he still remained highly visible in the-community.It seemed everybody in attendance had some close tie to Meilleur and each was willing to share some tale of the man who now slips into the title of Ottawa Valley legend.Meilleur’s hat was passed around among family members and performers who sang and fiddled on stage for the audience.Pontiac songbird and Meilleur’s niece, Gail Gavan, led the proceedings and started out with a song devoted to Saying goodbye ; • Wilbur McLean, The Equity Fred Meilleur’s son, Peter, leans over to kiss his father’s casket at the conclusion of the burial service for Meilleur Saturday in Chapeau. The hat on top of the casket belonged to Fred and at the ceremony’s conclusion, Peter took it and said he would keep it but “would never be man enough" to wear it.Fred’s Hotel that aptly concluded with the line, “Fred’s is the place we belong”.Meilleur’s death was even the subject of a member statement in the House of Parlianjfnt on Feb.5, as Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Cheryl Gallant, addressed lier colleagues “with sadness” to pay respect to Meilleur. So even the members of federal government got to hear the now infamous story of the silver beaver, whereby new visitors to Fred’s were duped into the tale before being led inside a cooler where a nickel sat on a counter.Meilleur is survived by daughter Anne, son Peter, daughter Judy (Sullivan), daughter Kathryn (Simpkins) and daughter Debra (Douglas). He is predeceased by his sister Margurite (Gavan) and son Rolland.Pallbearers for the funeral were Debra Meilleur Douglas, daughter; Michael Meilleur, grandson; Shane Sullivan, grandson; Cody Gagnon, great-grandson; Brady Fitzpatrick, long time employee and Pat Trimm.Honouraiy pallbearers were Linus (Wrangler) Hearty, Ken (Linus) Coghlan, Andrew Keon, Brian Adam, Mike Galligan, Billy Brennan, Burt Collins and Hec Clouthier.Meilleur was given the celebrity treatment for his funeral with much of the Ottawa Valley media from both sides of the river in attendance.PONTIAC 0 11 12 17-24W Wilbur McLean, The Equity Bruce Hodgins’ team won this year’s Shawville Community Curling Bonspiel.Team members are, from left, Tristen Beattie, Justin Zimmerling, Hodgins and Reid Crawford. In rear is bonspiel co-chair, Laird Murray, holding the toilet seat trophy.Take a seat, Bruce Hodgins WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor SHAWVILLE • After more than 20 years of making miniature toilet seats, Bruce Hodgins finally got to take one home. The Shawville man who has voluntarily made the miniature wooden toilet seats that go to each member of the winning team at the Shawville Community Bonspiel won one of his own this year after his foursome was declared the winner of the 66-team bonspiel.Hodgins’ skipped his foursome, which also included third Reid Crawford, second Justin Zimmerling and lead Tristen Beattie to big wins in all three of their games in the tourna- ment. All four teammates are from Shawville.“I never thought I’d actually win one myself,” said Hodgins, holding one of his miniature toilet seats. It was the foursome’s first time playing together and the team was put together just a day-and-a-half before the team’s first game. While Hodgins estimates he’s played in the bonspiel for about 25 years — “It’s what first got me into curling,” he said — his teammates were significantly less experienced with Crawford in his fifth year and both Zimmerling and Beattie in their second years.“They’re lucky. It took me 25 years to win and it just took them two,” laughed Hodgins. The winning team is determined using a system whereby individual ends won and margins of victory are totalled to create a score.Hodgins’ winning score of 70 was deemed by a few longtime members to be the highest ever recalled.“Really?Wow,” said Hodgins when told of his team’s potential record-set-ting performance.Overall, the bonspiel was a success this year, according to its organizers.Longtime chairman Laird Murray will be stepping aside after this year, making way for new organizers.“With Phyllis (Wilson) and I helping Laird this year, we learned a lot for next year,” said co-chair, Stu Stark.Stark said the most difficult task for him to learn will be keeping divisions balanced in terms of skill.“You have some curlers and you have some non-curlers so it’s hard,” he said. One of the most important things for next year will be bringing the bonspiel back up to 72 teams. This year was the first time anyone could recall the bonspiel having fewer than 72 teams. The Equity had a good bonspiel, finishing 17th overall. The team won its first game over Tullochgorum Farm, lost its second game 8-6 to eventual Teal division winners Shawville Ford, but recovered to win its final contest against Atko’s Army, 8-5.Fire claims life of local LEAH IVERSON Equity Reporter PONTIAC • Two fires swept through central Pontiac late Friday night, taking the life of one local man and burning both homes in their path. The Sûreté du Québec received a call at 6:30 p.m.Friday about a house fire on Flood Street in Litchfield.According to police spokesperson Mélanie Larouche, the Campbell’s Bay firefighers rescued a man who was in the house at the time.He was transported to Shawville Hospital, where he later died. The victim is 30-year-old Rodney Leach of Litchfield.Police suspect it was an electrical fire, but an investigation is still underway. While the firefighters continued to battle the blaze, they received the news of another fire in Vinton. With two fires at the same time, the Campbell’s Bay department called on the Fort Coulonge firefighters for help.“We were at the first fire when we got called again,” said firefighter Kevin Kluke.“The Fort Coulonge firefighters came with their pumper truck and we had our tankers.” The Vinton fire began on the first floor and quickly spread to the second.Although there was considerable damage, Kluke said the house did not burn to the ground.“It’s reparable, but not livable,” he said, adding that the fire is believed to have been ignited by grease.A total of 22 firefighters worked on the two fires until roughly 1 a.m.Saturday.Proposed incinerator site moved from Shawville to Quyon LEAH IVERSON Equity Reporter PONTIAC • Plans for an incinerator project that would provide a solution to the region’s waste problems is still underway in the Pontiac — just not in Shawville. After repeated failed attempts to get verbal commitments from the MRC mayors, promoter John Keyuk of the waste-to-energy plan has decided to move locations and plans to build the site in Quyon.“AU I asked was for a commitment from the mayors and I never got that.1 couldn’t wait forever,” said Keyuk.“I’m perplexed by the fact that there’s a landfill problem and here is a viable solution that’s better for the environment, generates electricity, is much cheaper to transport and would employ 25-30 jobs, and they still can’t make a decision.” Keyuk recently sent an email to Shawville Mayor Albert Armstrong explaining the reasons behind the move.He was not surprised.“Everything was true in the letter and I completely agree with him,” said Armstrong.“All John (Keyuk) wanted was a commitment from the MRC.I’m unhappy he got no response.” Keyuk first presented the incinerator idea last April, which immediately garnered support from the municipalities of Shawville, Clarendon and Pontiac.Though other municipalities made verbal commitments along the way, the MRC could not agree firmly.“We've been working on this for the past 10 months putting in time and energy to plan it out,” said Armstrong, adding, “I was discouraged at first, then I was angry that they didn’t want to look at this as an option and be positive bout it.“We had commitments from Otter Lake and Biyson, but I think the rest thought because it wasn’t in their own backyard, they weren’t interested. This would have been something great for the MRC,” he added. While Keyuk originally chose Shawville as the site of the future incinerator, he’s confident that the Quyon location will fit the bill.“It has better land zoning in place and is more convenient,” he said, “The Municipality of Pontiac has been very supportive and Eddie McCann (Mayor) has been great.” Over in the Municipality of Pontiac, McCann looks forward to the project and said the trio of municipalities will work together.•“From my understanding, one area will get the incinerator and the other will get a fabrication plant, so it’s still a win-win situation for everyone,” he said.“My main concern was to keep this project in the Pontiac, and we’ve accomplished that.” The proposed fabrication plant would manufacture some parts used in incinerators.Armstrong seconded the plan to work as a team and has remained hopeful for the future of Shawville.“Hopefully we can do the co-generation,” he said.“Our council is very positive and we won’t quit.Well PONTIAC • A remarkable third period comeback by the Pontiac Junior “B's in the fourth game of then opening round playoff series may very well have sated their season.Playing at home Sunday night, the Pontiacs faced a must-win scenario, already trailing the series two games to one.The team trailed 3-2 for most of the third period but a goal by standout rookie Ryan Lagace with less than seven minutes remaining tied the contest and Neil Chabot netted the eventual game winner with just 2:16 left to lift the Pontiacs to victory. The Pontiacs were largely outplayed by the visiting Packers through the first two periods, including a remarkably one-sided opening frame that saw the Junior 'B’s outshot by a 15-4 margin. However, a good performance by new starting goalie David Bernier allowed the Pontiacs to end the first peri- od level at one goal each Jesse Whiteduck-Cere scored the first penod goal for Pontiac with assists from Justin Alary and Derek Foran. The game was a clean one overall with only five penalties called throughout regulation.Things got ugly at the game’s conclusion, however, as a scu ' lie broke out that resulted in fists being thrown and roughing penalties assessed to four players, including Pontiac players Joran Graham and Jimmy MacMillan.Lagace also scored for the Pontiacs in the second period. The Pontiacs outshot the Packers 18-7 in their comeback third period.Rookie Maxime Riendeau-Danis was instrumental in the win, providing assists on three of the Junior “B’s four goals. The series overall has been extremely tight so far, and I am always concerned about the physical well-being and health of our youth. But we need to draw the line somewhere. So now I hear that the City of Gatineau has voted to cut junk food from hockey arena canteens within the next three years.Items such as French fries, potato chips, and chocolate bars will be replaced with spaghetti, muffins, and sandwiches.Look, I understand the city s well-intentioned attempt to reduce the transfats in the diets of the Gatineau hockey fan and youth.I know the statistics — Outaouais has the highest rate of obesity in Quebec.I know, I wrote an article on it.And I’m in favor of changing the trend, and helping our youth become healthier, and more health conscientious. But isn’t this step a little drastic?Other arenas in Quebec have tried this, and the canteens have lost a quarter of their revenue. So this means the city of Gatineau will have to compensate by lowering canteen rental fees. But for me, this has nothing to do with money. It’s the principle of it all.Do the people in Gatineau, the people who made this decision, really believe that taking junk food out of arenas is going to stop people from eating it?If people want it, they’ll get it.How hard is it to just leave the arena, head to the nearest McDonalds (or any restaurant in the area), grab an order of French fries and head back to the arena to watch the game?Maybe I’m just old school—growing up and spending my days in arena lobbies that smelled like French fries, hot dogs, and popcorn. Those were the days, and those are the memories.I just can’t see myself watching a game of hockey from the stands, while munching on a plate of spaghetti. But hey, that’s just me.I’m all in favour of producing healthy choices in arenas, actually I encourage it, but that doesn’t mean you have to eliminate the choices.Just add more, make the options available, so that children and parents can make their own decisions on what they eat.Don’t force it upon us.Isn’t there freedom of choice in this country? It’s not like these kids spend every day of their lives in an arena. If they practice through the week, then they’re there maybe an hour and a half at night.Weekends are the only time children will spend substantial time around rinks, so an unhealthy bite to eat, like chips or chocolate, is a treat for these kids, a rare treat.Don’t take that away from them.My wife and I disagree on this topic, but of course I never win against her. She’s all for this move. But I’m not.1 say keep the junk food where it is, but just add some healthier choices, and let the people decide for themselves. That’s my two cents. What do you think?Murphy is a former professional hockey player who 1967.Right: Elva and Stewart Stark show their closeness after 41 years.LEAH IVERSON Equity Reporter SAND BAY • When Stewart and Elva Stark first caught eyes at a friend’s birthday party in the early 1960’s, there was an instant connection.Little did they know at the time, but they both shared a lot of similar qualities and values.Although they met in Ottawa, they were both born and raised in small towns; Stewart in Starks Corner and Elva in Easton’s Corners near Smiths Falls.Being from tight-knit communities gave them both a greater sense of closeness and love for family and friends.“We are very old fashioned people,” said Stewart.“We believe in good values and give and take in a relationship.” After dating for a few years, the couple became a union in 1967 and looked forward to expanding their family, which would later include two daughters and a son. While parenting sometimes brought challenges, Elva said the couple’s love remained strong.“In the beginning years, raising kids was stressful,” she said.“As we got older, we grew even closer together. He’s a good egg.” Still living in the city, the Starks made regular trips to the Pontiac so their children could get the best of both worlds.“We had a cottage in Sand Bay and we would take the kids there every summer,” said Stewart.“We liked it so much that we bought property and built a house there after we retired.” Now with their kids grown and out of the house with families of their own, the Starks had time to explore their hobbies and spend quality time together While Stewart took up cutting rock and woodwork, Elva discovered a love for crafts and quilting. They also developed mutual hobbies, such as boating and taking walks together, and they both share a love of curling.“Stewart started curling in 1985 and since he was always playing, I decided to go too,” she said, noting that the couple have made many friends through the sport.Despite being polar opposites in personality, the Starks said it’s their mutual views on love and marriage that have led to more than four decades of marriage under their belt.“I’m easygoing,” said Stewart.“And I’m more chatty, but sometimes opposites attract,” added Elva.“But we both believe that patience and the same values are important in marriage,” said Stewart. With their 42nd wedding anniversary coming up in May, that instant spark is still ignited and their love has only gotten better with time.“He’s very kind and funny. He’s got a rare sense of humour,” said Elva, smiling at Stewart.“She gets along with everyone,” added Stewart.“I love everything about her.” Luck of the draw lands Campbell’s Bay man new car LEAH IVERSON Equity Reporter PONTIAC • Persistence paid off for Campbell’s Bay resident Robert Martin as he drove away with a new fully loaded Dodge Charger SXT after his entry was chosen in a nationwide contest held by Canadian Tire and Stanley Canada. When Martin first got word of the contest, the avid car lover went straight to his computer to enter. After writing the required essay on his love of cars, all Martin could do was sit back and wait.“I’ve entered a lot of contests online but I’ve never won before,” said Martin, a retired police officer.“I just had to wait and see.” Even after he got the call that he was chosen, Martin still didn’t believe his good fortune.“They called me and said I won. They gave me a skill testing question on math and I must have checked it over 10 times before giving my answer,” he laughed.“Even after they said congratulations, I thought it might be a scam.I just couldn’t believe it.” But when Martin pulled up to the Canadian Tire in Shawville Thursday only to see his Stanley Gillett Evernham Motorsports racing-approved car in the parking lot, seeing was believing.“Now it feels real. It’s just fantastic,” he said, adding, “I’ve been dreaming of this for weeks and looked at pictures of a similar model, but this is so much better.” On hand Thursday was Robert Santosuosso of Canadian Tire headquarters in Toronto and Greg Allen of Stanley Canada, who handed over the keys to the excited Martin.Grinning from ear to ear, Martin took the driver’s seat and revved his new engine and examined the rest of the estimated $60,000 car, while wife Andiée admired the yellow racing stripes in the interior lining.“I love the sound,” said Martin, glancing back at his wife.“I think she’s more excited than I am.” Checking out the back seat area, Andrée was already imagining taking road trips in the head-turning car.“The whole car is beautiful. It would be a nice car to go down south in,” she said. And while the couple has yet to decide whether to keep or sell the car, Martin was sure on one thing — he was a lucky man.“The most I've ever won in my life is $2 in the lotto,” he said.“This is the first time I've won something this MRC CAROLE ST-AUBIN Equity Reporter PONTIAC • The Pontiac MRC’s land use committee have begun preliminary studies in hopes of finding an ideal location for future industrial development. The Pontiac MRC is compiling the necessary information to create an inventory of all the existing industrial and commercial use zones of the Pontiac’s 18 municipalities. They will all be considered in planning for a possible regional industrial park, according to the MRC Land Use Planner, Pierre Duschene. The study will establish what specific industry needs could be supported with what is already available, and what could easily be developed by1 taking into consideration such ele- ments as the water table, the soil, sewage, railroad, and major highway accessibility. The committee then plans to produce a repertoire of the services that could potentially be supported in a particular location before they seek government funding for potential future development.“You have to be able to set the table before you invite people to come and eat,” said MRC Warden, Michael McCrank, who says the idea has been talked about periodically over the past decade.“The idea would be to share the revenue from an industrial park in a way that all the municipalities could benefit from,” said McCrank.Strategically, two major locations that have already been exploited as industrial sites, the Bristol Mines in Bristol, and Smurfit Stone in Litchfield would be looked at.“However, it doesn’t necessarily mean either of these locations would be chosen,” said the Land Uce Committee Chairman, Ross Vowles.”We are looking to diversify the MRC economy, find solution for development, recreation, and tourism, because we can no longer rely on the forestry industry,” said Duschene.“This project is still at its infancy stage, we are still in the process of preparing the necessary legislature,” said Vowles.“But there is a real potential for development, like the Gaspé project that was approved to help develop its industrial park in August 2008,” he added.Ottawa man dies from snowmobile collision injuries Circumstances surrounding crash still under investigation CAROLE ST-AUBIN Equity Reporter QUYON • Fifty-one-year old William Angus of Ottawa died at the Centre Hospitalier Régional de l’Outaouais in Hull early Sunday morning as the result of a snowmobile collision that took place near Quyon on Saturday evening.“When we arrived at the scene at 10:26 the man told us he could not feel his legs.We immediately called the fire department and ambulance,” said an MRC des Collines Police spokesperson. After being stabilized at the Pontiac Hospital Centre in Shawville, where he was transported on Saturday night, the man was transferred to Hull where he died at 6 a m.the next day.Angus was the owner and operator of A.B.Crane Service Ltd.in Ottawa. He is survived by his wife and daughter.Nick Matechuck owner of Gavan’s Hotel in Quyon, where an annual poker run for the Pontiac Snowmobile Driver’s Association was being held, said that he had seen the man earlier that evening. The man and his wife had been registered participants in the event, according to the event organizer, Marcel Bruyère.Reports that alcohol may have been involved and that the victim’s wife is now under investigation for misleading police by saying that she was driving the snowmobile at the time of the impact, as was stated in The Ottawa Citizen, and Metro articles could not be confirmed.Floating on Page 9 CAROLE ST-AUBIN Equity Reporter SHAWVILLE • Body by Design is celebrating its tenth year of fitness.Julia Clarke, who immigrated from Lankshire, England with her husband Simon, a professional musician, began teaching freelance aerobics, specializing in aquatic aerobics, Kobo (a non-contact martial art concept) and pilâtes in 1999 Clarke is also a qualified Yogawise instructor for various level of advancement. Her story she says, runs somewhat parallel to that of Joseph Pilâtes, the exercise program developer, who was very ill as a young child.“1 was chronically asthmatic, until the age of 11, and it had also affected my heart. My parents even whisked me off to to the Swiss Alps and Australia for the beneficial air, and it did help somewhat,” she says.Against these odds how- ever, Clarke attended at school of dance and dramatic art.The dancing strengthened her health and she began dancing professionally at the age of 15.Clarke accredited her regained health to the regular exercise and decided to obtain the necessary certifications to become a qualified instructor.Clarke has since taught gym classes, on-site corporate classes, evening fitness courses, group workshops and has participated in exercise programs with an active member-base of 70-80 people of all ages from 16-58, from all over Ottawa Valley.Sue Farland, who has been taking classes on and off for the past 10 years' said, “Julia has really helped me gain flexibility.I like that her program is multi-leveled.“She is very aware and in tune to what your personal Sheenboro Myrtle Sullivan ’l 689-2236 I A living legend * passes.A legend remains. We said goodbye to a good friend Saturday.Fred Meilleur’s funeral took place in Chapeau.Six clergy were in attendance with Father Tim Moyle conducting. The church was full. The news media were evident with their cameras and note pads. The New RO TV station, the Pembroke paper, The Equity were all there. In the past few days there was extensive coverage on radio and TV and articles in Ottawa Valley newspapers.Fred’s pall bearers were Brady Fitzpatrick, Pat Trimm, Michael Meillieur, Shane Sullivan, Cody Gagnon, and Debbie Meillieur.Honourary pall bearers were Allan Huckabone, Andrew Keon, Brian Adam, Bert Collin, Hector Cloutier Jr., Jimmy Ward, Linus Hearty and our own Bill Brennan.Fred’s daughter Anne told us that her Dad and the family did some funeral preparation back in July when he had some health problems. At that time he said he would like Father Tim to conduct the service and they selected all the pallbearers. However Fred recovered, only to be struck down six months later.Father Tim told a number of stories about Fred and his late wife Helen, some very touching regarding their contribution to the community, and some on the humorous side, to the knowing smiles of the congregation. The organist was Teresa Conroy who was accompanied by Louis Schryer.Near the end of the service Louis played a rendition of Danny Boy which fit perfectly.Fred was laid to rest in the graveyard behind the church beside the love of his life, his wife Helen. The Meilleur family hosted a dinner at the community hall later that afternoon.Anne the oldest daughter made a lovely speech as did other family members.Gail Gavan, Fred’s niece, sang his favourite songs interspersed with thoughts about her uncle. She said that Fred was one of her biggest fans and supporters.Often when she was entertaining throughout the valley she would look out into the audience to spot Fred cheering her on.At one point Gail had most of the Meilleur family up there singing along with her to the applause of all who attended.A number of musicians entertained us and gave their time in recognition of Fred.Carol and Peter Dawson were there.Louis Schryer was there with his fiddle and daughter Chelsey step dancing.Jim Beatty was there on keyboard and sang along with Mike Fox on guitar.Jim Connor from Ottawa, who had played fiddle at Fred’s when he just a young fella, many years ago, took the stage as well and played tunes that Fred would have surely enjoyed.Brian Adam was level is and you are able to follow at your own pace. She always shows the modifications that you can do which is constructive and makes you enjoy doing your exercise. She makes it a fun social gathering.” Louise Murdock, who began taking Clarke’s class es in 2006 now attends classes four times a week and has lost an added 45 lbs.to the 30 she had lost before beginning the aerobics and pilâtes classes.“1 was basically allergic to exercise. But Julia has helped turn my mission into something doable She makes it fun to be there,” said Murdock.Clarke is now helping Murdock train for a 60 km walk for breast cancer in Ottawa this coming June.Clarke taught her classes at Pine Lodge in Bristol, and the former Curves gym in Shawville in the past.Despite the fact that she does a fair amount of travel- there telling a few stories and singing a few songs that would have often been heard at the Chapeau hotel over the years. It was a day to be remembered. It was a “dry" but wonderful send off.Fred would have wanted it that way. Some of my family and I headed home about 3 p.m.but talk of Fred and the Chapeau Hotel continued on through the evening.I dined with friends and we played a hand or two of euchre, but the conversation turned to the Meilleur family and the hotel.I talked with Brian Adam, the mayor of Allumette Island, before sitting down to write this column and he told me that there was a second celebration of Fred and the Chapeau Hotel that took place on the main street of Chapeau in front of where the Chapeau Hotel used to be.There was a large wreath to mark the spot.A crowd started gathered there that afternoon and a party commenced and ran until near midnight. The party was unplanned and unorganized while at the same time being thoughtful and respectful.A bit of a tail-gate party you might say. There was a crowd of about 75 partygoers, who gathered to reminisce and reflect on Fred his family and the hotel.Brian said that the street was full people causing motorists to go round the block. They were all good people remembering good people and good times.Brian said that the next morning, with the exception of the wreath, there was no indication of such a gathering. No litter, not a tin can, nothing.Everything was in its place.Fred would have liked such a celebration.I knew Fred for about 70 years.During that time I never met a person that could find fault with him.He was a generous and grand person. For my family and I, having dinner at the hotel was always a special event. The menu was most often pork tenderloin or steak with all the trimmings and this was topped up with butterscotch pie.The highlight of the meal would be when Fred would saunter over with cork screw in hand to welcome us to his establishment. He would greet all of us by name and then comment on our family history and all the good times of bygone days.He made us ail feel so special. He would recommend a good bottle of wine to add that additional sparkle to the evening. He would spin a yarn or so and even if it was one we had heard before it was in the telling that made it fresh and just as enjoyable as the first time we heard it.Back in the mid-eighties Chapeau celebrated a milestone birthday for Fred.It was a sit down dinner for a thousand people and, you guessed it, it was a sell out.Now there was a special guest but I think it would have been a sell out anyway. Most of us, my late hus- band Emmett and sons Pat and Lornie included, were big Montreal Canadian fans as were most of Chapeau Hotel patrons. The guest was none other than Maurice The Rocket’ Richard. There they were on stage together, a national hockey league legend and our own Fred Meilleur. The Rocket’ was a special guy, but so was our Fred.Suffice to say The Rocket’ didn’t go to just anyone’s birthday party.Maurice and Fred were both spe- ling to teach, she has also been teaching at her Victoria Street studio in Shawville for the past two years.“1 am pleased with the constant growth of my business.I have enjoyed teaching through the years and continue to do so,” said Clarke.Clarke says they have made the improvements of an added change room and washroom facilities, and are also planning to change the flooring in the near future. Some of the activities Clarke hopes to put in motion for the year 2009 include: Kidz pilâtes classes, Kidz yoga, and Mom and me exercise groups.“I will be doing exercise classes with the Maison des Jeunes groups in the area,” said Clarke, who participated in a health program with a group of 11 and 12-year-old kids from Dr.S.E.McDowell Elementary School last year.cial people in their own way — and both legends that we will all remember for many years to come.Fred, Thanks for the memories. An Irish Blessing: May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty.Speaking of special people, I would like to wish a couple of people happy birthday. To my granddaughter Chantal Oullette and my grandson Ian’s wife, Natasha Clyde.May 2009 be a wonderful year for you.Division Pontiac C245, Rang 13 C.P.249 Shawville (Québec) J0X 2Y0
