WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor QUYON • It’s obvious right away there’s something different about Quyon Martial Arts.Usually for a journalist, the process of finding people to interview a story goes something like this: Look for people who make eye contact, or are particularly involved or those in charge.Sometimes those approached are shy, bashful or don’t want their name to be in the newspaper. The process is exceptionally different at Quyon Martial Arts, however.People charge forward to talk, galloping in the direction of the reporter, sometimes yelling across the room. They all want to say how great their experience has been with Quyon Martial Arts. And it’s all because of one man.“He’s a great role model,” said Lynn Charbonneau, a black belt who has been training under Sensei Denis Renaud for seven years.“I’ve been a lifelong citizen of this community and his dedication is really over and above,” exclaims Don Murdock, student.“He’s just a great man,” sings another student. What his students long-recognized was realized recently by the Municipality of Pontiac, which gave $200 to Renaud to be used for equipment for his school. That amount is likely only a fraction of what he has spent out of pocket over the years to help his students succeed.Renaud reluctantly admits that he has spent a lot of his own money to purchase equipment for his students, in some cases when they couldn’t afford it themselves.“I’m not rich by any means but I have enough,” said Renaud.“1 give when I can.The satisfaction is watching the growth of my students. That’s enough for me.” Municipality of Pontiac Mayor Eddie McCann said council was approached by Murdock, who explained the difference Renaud’s work as sensei has made in the community.“The young children learn discipline and respect. There are kids vandalizing and breaking windows in the community, but they are not the kids who are coming here,” said Murdock.“Oh no, it’s none of our kids doing that for sure,” reassured Renaud. The students attending Renaud’s martial arts school in Quyon and Luskville are diverse. There are children who have barely begun school, people in their 30s getting into shape and senior citizens looking to pick up a new pasttime.Renaud treats them all equally.During sessions, he barks the instructions of a karate master appearing ready at any time to lay a beat down if anybody dare question his authority. As soon as class is over, however, Renaud turns into a sweet, kind, gentle man.“We’re more than just a karate school, we’re a support group,” he said.“The idea is that everybody does the best they can. That’s all I ever ask." Please see KARATE on page two Political hopeful holds meet and greet in Shawville Bryson Farms employees and supporters flood café WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor SHAWVILLE • Dozens of friends, family members and employees of Bryson Farms co-owner Stuart Collins crammed into Café 349 in Shawville Sunday to hear one of his most vocal supporters speak.Cindy Duncan McMillan, the federal Liberal candidate for Pontiac, held a meet-and-greet to give her the opportunity to familiarize herself with many of Collins’ associates, who have become among Duncan McMillan’s most staunch supporters. Her stance staunchly in favour of preventing extradition for Collins has become a political sparkplug in Pontiac. The state of Texas is imposing the extradition of Collins back to the United States where he is wanted on two counts of theft stemming from when he was an attorney in Texas.Collins has repeatedly insisted his innocence and that he cannot get a fair trial, because the district attorney has a longstanding problem with Collins.Supporters of Collins have publicly denounced Pontiac Member of Parliament Lawrence Cannon, for what they see as inaction for a man who has provided dozens of jobs to local people. Please see LIBERAL on page two 75WSI WWW Wilbur McLean, THE EQUITY Pontiac federal Liberal candidate Cindy Duncan McMillan was in Shawville at Café 349 on Sunday afternoon.c*Wea ALL DOORS | 34 x 80’ Double Garden Door, 70 1/2"x82 3/4’ painted, white aluminum sil, white internal grills, sliding screen, handle not included.Your Full Line Steel Entrance Door Store! soar down the middle of the canyon on a zip line. And if the Chutes Coulonge Foundation gets all the funding they’ve applied for, that won’t be the only addition to the site.“We’re focusing on zip lines, children’s course and via ferrata,” said Christine Mitchell, director general for the foundation. They’ve already been funded for half the money they need. Now they’re just waiting to find out about the other half, she said.“If they say no, we are still going to do the zip line and the children’s course,” she said.Via ferrata, a secure rock climbing system, would have to wait.If they get all the funding, theyll start work on the new installations in June, she said.If they only get half, they’ll start everything in September. There are some other new additions at the chutes.A new trail that connects to the other side of the river has already been started and they hope to have it completed this spring, she said. And their new website is already up and running. But, it’s the entire package that has foundation president, Dennis Blaedow excited.“We’ve improved the whole outlook on the site by leaps and bounds,” he said.Studies indicate the number of visitors is going to triple, he said. And what’s good for the chutes will be good for the entire region.“The whole county is going to benefit significantly from the tourism and from the recognition of the site,” he said.Blaedow is also president of the Pontiac Tourism Association. As of last weekend, the chutes are open for the season.Wilbur McLean, The Equity Sensei Denis Renaud, far right, has been influential in the Quyon and Luskville communities.KARATE: Sensei effects change Continued from page one McCann walked into the gym at St.Mary’s school Thursday night with a look of surprise. He admitted surprise at the number of students in the gym, about 40.Enrollment fluctuates according to seasons and people’s interests but always remains at healthy levels.“I didn’t realize it was this many people. It really is impressive,” said McCann.Renaud holds classes four nights per week, two nights each at St.Mary’s school in Quyon and Notre Dame school in Luskville.Even with the donation, his karate teachings are a money-losing proposition for him.But Sensei Renaud isn’t going anywhere.LIBERAL: Candidate discusses issues Continued from page one Before it became a political issue, Duncan McMillan supported Collins after meeting him last year and said she has known his business partner, Terry Stewart, for a number of years.“It’s a dossier I’m passionate about,” said Duncan McMillan.Bryson Farms produces certified organically grown vegetables.Unusual for a political stop was the age of many of those in attendance, indicative of the younger-than-average employment age of Bryson Farms’ staff.“I wanted to support (Collins),” said 16-year-old Daniel Newberry of Calumet Island, of why he decided to attend.“She speaks very well. She was right the whole time.” McMillan’s 15-minute long address discussed a variety of issues, including the importance of Collins remaining in Canada, eco-tourism, forestry, agriculture and jobs.“Why aren’t our elected representatives talking about the management of our forests?,” demanded McMillan.“It is in the hands of every Canadian to determine how we build our country of the future.” Ellen Avard of Clarendon and a Bryson Farms employee said she attended the meet-and-greet for two reasons, because she said Bryson Farms is an excellent example of sustainable development and Collins and Stewart were the best bosses she ever had.“I’m more of a social democrat but hearing Cindy speak I’d vote for her,” said Avard, a longtime NDP supporter.“She epitomizes the voice of the social democracy.” Duncan McMillan said she has been active on many fronts since her nomination one year ago, and has enjoyed the process.“I wish I was getting paid to do this because I love it,” she said.“I get to meet a whole bunch of people and really talk to a variety of people. This is a dream job.” A long-time beef farmer in Farrelton, Que.and former president of the Québec Farmers Association, Duncan McMillan said she is well-connected agriculturally in the area but that she is not a one-issue candidate.“I’m interested in all issues relevant to Pontiac, and I’m
