positive ; example of people putting their mental and phys: ical elements together in an effort to aid the : development of tourism in the Pontiac MRC.All \u2022 those involved should be commended. However, there is much work to be done in the tourism sector of the local economy.Much work to be done in a sector considered high risk.We don't live in a build-it-and-they-will-come world.Since the advent of mass electronic media, pie are not so prone to stand in awe of anything anymore.Seeing the Taj Mahal countless times on television sort of dulls the urgency to visit the architectural masterpiece. In this year's Local Action Plan for Economy and Employment compiled by the Local Development Centre (CLD), the results of the public consultations are reproduced in two columns listing strengths and obstacles to developing a viable tourist industry.Needless to say, the obstacles outnumbered the strengths two to one. After all, it's easier to pick out negative aspects than positive ones, not only in tourism.But.I digress. The strengths can be condensed into the following categories of attractions: cultural (festivals, fairs), natural (Chutes, Oiseau Rock), and developed (Cyclopark, Waterway).Unfortunately, it's not so easy condensing the obstacles into a few neat packages.Given that these consultations were \"public consultations,\" one must look closely at what the people decided were the problems. What stands out is the number of obstacles stemming from the lack of infrastructure and events. The major obstacles were noted as a lack of events, a lack of \"coordination between those involved in the preparation, planning, (and) publicity of events,\" and \"few quality reception infrastructures.\" Though the public consultations were short on attendees, participants accurately pointed at the problems which plague any tourist area. There is much work to be done to establish a long-term, sustainable tourist program in Pontiac. That's not to say it can't be done.Just that it's not going to be easy. Are we doing enough, too little, or too much? The latter query comes from questions asked by citizens and local politicians alike. At last month's MRC meeting, one mayor suggested it seems all the efforts and money of the local bureaucracy are channeled into tourism.Which is a perception tourism promoters are going to have to address if the venture is going to work. What about manufacturing, some ask?Shouldn't we he doing something to attract ufacturing beyond lumber and pulp? What about high-tech?What have we done to court the growing high-tech industry down river in Kanata, 25 minutes from the Quyon Ferry? What about value-added industries for the forestry sector?Where are they? What are we doing to help the agricultural sector?Remember, if we don't question the steps we are taking to reach our destination, if we don't question the direction we are heading, if we don't question those driving the bus of local development, we may never get to where we should be, or may arrive somewhere we don\u2019t really want to be.So, show up at Saturday's meeting and ask questions. For if we are going to invest so much time, money and energy into the tourism sector, let's do it right and realistically. After all, tourism is only part of the answer to addressing our county's economic needs.YOUR OPINION St.Alphonsus raises $400 (and a few children)
