to be served by a regional fair is about the same for both locations, but the roads to Shawville are much better than those going to Papi-neauville.For these reasons the Fair is well set to take advantage of the opportunity for growth that regional status would permit. All over Pontiac County the directors, chairmen and committee members of the Quyon, Chapeau and Shawvillc Fairs are extremely busy completing the arrangements to make this year's fairs as interesting and enjoyable as possible. At the same time, in Shaw-ville many of these volunteers are involved in another time consuming activity: raising the status of the Shaw-ville Fair to a regional fair.Editorial six years ago McDowells settled in Pon- ject.Betty Davis, histori-tiac.William McDowell cal items and scrap books known interesting exhibits, and more visitors.Yet it is not certain that Shawville will be successful in its bid. This is because the decision will be made by people more concerned with the political content of the choice than the logical content.Few politicians would know the difference between a heifer and a Hereford, but they are very skillful at counting votes. The directors of the Papineauville Fair have been actively lobbying in Quebec City for several years. These improvements would in turn result in a more vigorous, competitive and ultimately more profitable agricultural community, the main reason for having an agricultural fair in the first place. Both Quyon and Chapeau Fairs will also benefit from these changes. As a district fair, Shawville has for many years included exhibitors from what were originally Pontiac and Gatineau Counties and are now Pontiac MRC, Gatineau MRC, the Municipalities of Pontiac, West Hull, La Pêche and Aylmer. Now there is an opportunity for the Fair to open up to exhibitors from the entire agricultural region 08, which includes most of West Quebec. This is because the provincial ministry responsible for agriculture (MAPAQ) is trying to establish regional fairs in each region of Quebec. The administration intends to make the choice for region 08 by October. In addition, the long term survival of the Shawville Fair itself would be assured. However, Shawville Fair is not the only fair being considered for regional status by MAPAQ.Papineauville Fair, which was held this year at the end of July is also in the running.Even with all these good reasons for choosing the Shawville Fair, one more needs to be supplied: an indication of the support this project has from the local community.Already, the directors of the Chapeau and Quyon Fairs have given their support, as have the twenty mayors of Pontiac M.R.C., and the Pontiac U.P.A.What remains is for the general population to tell the Minister of Agriculture, Michel Pagé, that it is in favour of Shawville Fair becoming a regional fair. The oldest man present was Dwight McDowell, 89, a grandson of Long Willed to cut himself out a Ham, and the oldest worn-farm in the sixth range of an fifteen thousand people visited during the four days of the fair. The horse shows, heavy, light and western, are among the biggest in Quebec. The dairy and beef cattle shows attract more exhibitors and animals than any other in the region. The advantages this would bring to the Shawville Fair and Pontiac are many. The increased competition would lead to an improvement in the quality of livestock over the whole region. Moreover, provincial financial support for regional fairs is greater than for district fairs.Grants and interest free loans would be available to help improve the facilities.MAPAQ's
