year before Dr.Penfield died, J.Lewis took his future wife to meet his grandparents.Because of their age and the formal nature of the visit, the grandson was not disappointed when a meeting of the minds did sot occur. But a letter found after the Grandfather’s death made known what he had wanted to say that evening.44 In our 58 years of married life the most wonderful source of security and strength and happiness came to us from the awareness of companionship. At 84, soon to be 85, bodily attraction burns low and love continues. It is a thing of the spirit as companionship is.Some women have a mysterious gift of insight that can make a strong man into a creative one.I found such a one.I have a hunch you have." After his Grandfather's death, Lewis discovered an overpowering amount of records he used as the source of this biography. They included shelves of scientific summaries and theories, bundles of speeches, volumes of letters including the weekly ones to his Mother, books, and the most illuminating source of all, the diaries, which his Grandfather had written from the age of thirteen until a few days before his death. In addition there were the memories of everyone who knew him, including the Grandson’s own memories. One vivid recollection that Lewis recalls is Sunday morning “Prayers" at Magog Meadows, the Penfield s summer home in the Eastern Townships.“In the summer we would spend Sunday mornings listening to Grandfather read from the Bible and talk about whatever was on his mind for a few minutes. Then we would all say a prayer and sing a hymn." This was a ritual Dr.Penfield and his wife, Helen, began when their own children were young as a substitute for Sunday Church during summer holidays, and they continued the ritual when their grown family returned with the grandchildren for holidays. The biography has eleven chapters divided into three parts, (1) A Stubborn Let plus ten page of pictures, (2) Other Deere Open, and a good Index. It traces the evolution of Dr Wilder Penfield’# life from his birth in Spokane, Washington, in 1888, to his death in Montreal in 1976. ; ' .S I Grandson of the town’s banker, Wilder Penfield was raised in Hudson, New York, in a privileged circle “where there was much kindness, generosity, and laughter, a world where a small boy could know that important things were unchanging, and that if he read the Bible, worked hard, and obeyed the Golden Rule he could grow up to be anything he liked. This world was the wellspring of that certainty and confidence that distinguished him in adult life.’’ After graduating from High School at the top of his class he attended Princeton and Harvard Universities and thence to Oxford on his Rhodes Scholarship which had been his goal since he was 18 years old.Being aware that he could only do all the things he wanted to do in his life by enormous will power he became a plodder — “Someone who could succeed only by dint of stubborn and repeated effort. Therefore, ferocious concentration would have to be a substitute for genius.Never wasting a minute he learned to focus his entire attention on whatever was at hand, forcing himself to shut out anything that was not important, whether he was writing a paper, studying a book or report, or examining a patient.” Two Oxford University doctors became Dr.Wilder Penfield s models. From Sir William Osier he learned his creed, “like and sympathize with everyone,” and “to think of medicine as the highest and noblest calling, and to be convinced that it was not enough just to heal bodies.A physician must think of his patients as suffering human beings who come to him with all of their troubles and fears." Dr.Sherrington influenced Dr.Penfield s scientific thinking “more profoundly than anyone else because he imparted not just facts but a sense of WONDER and AWE at where it might all end." Penfield said, “I looked through his eyes and came to realize that here in the nervous system was the great unexplored field — the undiscovered country in which the mystery of the mind of man might someday be explained.” At Oxford he had in 18 months satisfied the course requirements for the first two years of medical school. After he studied for two more years at the John Hopkins School in the U.S.A.he decided to specialize in brain surgery rather than go into general practice. - , 1 E.r - I To prepare for his unusual approach to brain surgery through the basic sciences and clinical neurology.Dr.Penfield spent the next nine years studying for a second time at Oxford, and in Spain, and working and researching at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York. m ï vM | I Ï Then came the big decision.Would he accept an appointment as Professor at McGill and Neurosurgeon at the Royal Vk?To examine the politics with which Dr Penfield had to content before making his decision to come to Montreal, and before his plans were accepted to build a Neurosurgical clink makes captivating reading.of G Pirie.ONLY* 299 Bristol Council required by the terms of the agreement. The next farm’s \\ j productivity significantly.Forage ' crops containing legumes are the most acid sensitive, with alfalfa, trefoil and clover showing least tolerance.Virtually all crops will show a positive response to liming, if the soil pH is less than 5.0.Liming is highly recommended as a method of crop improvement.Limestone can be applied at any time, on sod, plowed or cultivated land, as long as the soil is firm enough for our trucks to drive on.LATE WINTER, when the ground is still frozen, IS AN IDEAL TIME TO SPREAD LIME.The fineness of the limestone is of critical importance. The finer the limestone, the faster it dissolves into the soil and the more effective it is.Ratings vary from zero for stone coarser than 2 millimeters to 100% for finer than 0.25 millimeter. The lime that AGRA SPREAD-ALL applies is guaranteed to be 100% effective in reducing the acidity of the soil.3 in.ABS Pipe 1/3 H P.Duro Golden Jet Pump .$ 199.95 Crane White Toilet, COMPLETE WITH SEAT.6 Jet Fiberez
