On Saturday, October 8th, thù little old railroad station which outlived ite usefulness beside the track and was moved down onto the ShawviUs Fair Grounds by the Pontiac Historical Society, will be officially opened. The ribbon will be snipped by none other than the Rt.Hon.John 0.Diefenbaker, well known and very popular in this area. All week groups of people of all ages have been working to make the museum worthy of such an honour.Members of the Historical Society have been assisted m this labor of love by well organised teams of school children [freed from school by the teachers strike). They still welcome help and still welcome additions to the display which has become more interesting daily. You would never imagine from its rather plain exterior what wonders are housed in this little building - a dream coming true for local historians and the culmination of hard work t*« parts of numerous local citisens. The ceremony is supposed to take place at 8 o'clock tn the afternoon. Two publication is free for the asking.Write to Mr Benoit Roy, Director of Information, Department of Agriculture, 200A, Chemin St.Foy, Québec, The latest word on the schools situation as regards English speaking Catholic secondary students, has come from Jean-Guy Lariviere, MNA.According to Mr Lariviere, there will be two new catholic high schools in Pontiac after all, as recommended in the transformation of the on McCullough report. One of these new .Immaculate Conception elementary school in Chapeau which will be then used for all grades. The second will be an entire new complex to be connected to the St John’s Elementary school in Campbell's Bay to accommodate the secondary school students from the central part of the County.Mr Lariviere hopes to see the schools ready for occupancy by the start of the 1978-79 school year in September 1978.The total cost of the transformation of Immaculate Conception School and the building of the connecting complex beside St John’s, is to be one and a half million dollars. The announcement was made last weekend by the Hon.Jean Bienvenue, Minister of Education for the Province of Québec. The school at Chapeau will accommodate 460 students and the one in Campbell’s Bay will accommodate 660 and both will be equipped with all services, according to the latest information from the Department.Mr Lariviere informs us that the Outaouais Regional School Board will get an order in council within the next week to hire the professionals to prepare the plans and construction should commence in about ten months. The Chapeau Immaculate Conception Elementary School now houses 150 students so the addition will make it pœeàble schools will be a Hospital fund Qué New regulations about location ticket” farms now totals $22,000 still needs $13,000 more ii Mr Jean-Guy Lariviere has notified THE EQUITY that there are some new regulations in effect with regard to location tickets. It seems that in the early days of Pontiac County certain pioneers were given location tickets with regard to parcels of land. After they had fulfilled the required clearing and working of their farms they would be given clear title to them, if they would just remember to apply for this title. However, numerous of these colonizers in the area would dear their land and build thereon and live there for a few years and eventually move away, forgetting to clear up the title to the land. They would still have the location tickets in their possession which would eventually fall into the hands of sir heirs.Meanwhile the clearing they had done might have been > * \\A dir r « z> wi0 be / for 500 more clear title to the lands would have been forfeited but due to various misunderstandings they would continue to pay tax having location tickets to properties should take them to the office of the Department of with Agriculture at Shawville to have their title to the lands deared 0 all * r v / Union Nationale executive mother, Mrs Frances» Elliott, took me to the Ayer's Cliff Fair in the Eastern Townships. The fair was not as large aa the Shawville Fair but it was interesting 4n one respect. My mother had organized a dome-ahaped booth to dramatize the need for alternate energy sources other than nuclear power. Two miniature instrumenta using wind power were exhibited.Information relating to the issues was____________________ available in all forms. For those wishing to influence the Dr.LamVa house heated by the urn, in Ayer’s CMf.government in the right direction, petitions were available recommending that the government abandon nuclear energy plana. This experience made me more aware of our own situation.Aa we live doee to one of the oldest power plants in the country and because it carries out nuclear experiments on a regular basis, I feel that we should ask the government to do more research on the effects of radio-activity emanating from the power plant and to make the results public. There are rumours that we are more subject to unusual forms of cancer along the Ottawa River.Do we know if the wastes are leaking into the Ottawa River?Perhaps it is getting into the air?The effects of the CANDU reactors are not felt for several years. The Chalk River plant has been in operation long enough for the effects to be felt.Should not be made aware of how it is affecting us?There are other rumours that the radio-active wastes being shipped by truck to Chalk River to be stored in containers under ground. These containers cannot outlive the wastes contained in them. Can we depend the scientists to discover safe methods for repackaging the continually increasing quantities of radio-active materials before the containers decompose/ What would happen if an earthquake occurred in the area? There are so many unanswered questions that we must ask the government to reconsider the problem. But everyone knows that we need to find more sources of energy to replace the coal and oil supplies which are not going to last forever. There are several possibilities.Wind power and solar energy are two sources that are receiving some attention in recent years. Before hydro-electric plants took over the energy problems, most farms were equipped with a wind mill We can look to the past for some of the solution.Solar energy is becoming increasingly more interesting to the scientists. In the United States where they have already become disenchanted with the wonders of nuclear reactors, large grants of money are being made available to those who want to experiment with houses heated by the sun.Just after we left the Ayer’s Cliff Fair, my mother took me to e solar heated house.ITiis really convinced me that ther* is another answer to the energy crisis besides the development of commercially for a customer in Canada.Nick Nicholson, the architect, had made an earlier house in which he lives and which is also on display in Ayer’s Cliff. The heating system is reasonably simple to understand. The sun shines on the huge glass plates on the roof which are at a 80 degree angle and face due south by the sun.Behind the thermopane is an air space, a black-corrugated-coUector surface, an air space for heat transfer, and insulation. The insulation between the collector and the house serves the purpose of insulating the home during non-solar periods and preventing the heat collected during sunny periods from entering the house directly. The heated air from the collector flows past a gravity damper (which permits the air to flow in one direction only) into the rock bed.The rock bed is made of crushed rock stored in a closet-like ans rzz through the ductwork into the house. The system is not perfect yet as they only expect to reduce the heating problem by 70%.When the solar system is not sufficient, Dr Lamy has a box stove which she can open into a fireplace. She also has an electric furnace.Z- oo « 1 o r s D U l k $ # Perhaps you are wondering how expensive government is limiting growth in its own spending to keep it in line with the overall growth of the Canadian economy. This means that every day hard choices must be made to limit new programs and trim Lion• CM) After one year, the anti-inflation program is doing what it set out to do.The most important achievement has been the drop in the inflation rat,e.A year ago, ° consumer prices were nsing at a rate of 10.6%.By August 1976, that rate of increase had dropped to 6.2%.This fall some unavoidable increases in energy costs and municipal taxes will affect the rate of inflation. In spite of this, the first year target of an inflation rate of no more than 8% will be met Increases in all forms of income - wages, salaries, fees, profits, dividends—are also being successfully restrained. On the average, pnces have gone up less than wages this year. This means that most Canadians can cope a bit better, we have more buying power than we had before the program began.visiting the people whose private decisions are affected by them. And not the governments that have to enforce them. But controls were and are needed, to bring inflation down and to assure a growing economy The program will be terminated by the end of 1978.Until it is ended, the government is committed to making sure the controls work hard to bring about a continuing reduction in the rate of inflation.Inflation has to be cut down to protect our personal buying power, our savings and pensions, and jobs lor Canadians. If last year s spiral of rising prices and incomes had continued, Canadian-made products would soon be unable to compete in world markets.Imports could easily undercut goods produced and sold here at home. It's especially important for us to keep our prices and costs competitive with the United States, and on both counts the U S.is still doing better than we are. Finally, inflation also hurts investment. And when investment goes down," unemployment goes up.After a year of controls, inflation has come down.Progress has been made, in protecting Canadian jobs and improving Canada's wellbeing. The success of the anti-inflation program so far has depended a great deal on the cooperation of many Canadians. With continued co-operation, we can all look forward to sharing a more prosperous and growing economy.PRIZES: TURKEYS -8 to 10 lbs CHICKENS — 3 to 4 lbs further, to no more than 6%.This can be achieved only if increases in everything slow down together. In our kind of market economy, prices have to be able to move up and down to some extent. But the anti-inflation program does put an effective restraint on prices by controlling profit margins. In the second year, the price and profit controls are being changed to make the rules simpler and to apply restraint more fairly among different companies. They also include important incentives to encourage the investments the country needs to make the economy grow and create new jobs for Canadians.New investment credits will make allowances for company profits re-invested to boost production and productivity. In the area of wages and salaries, the second year Guidelines limit increases to 6% as a protection against price increases, with 2% added as a share of national productivity.all this Information we can In our flies.Yoe may uae thia change 6T1 ^ EQUITY, Month Due more Name
