15c Plan to restore Old Fort William Snowmobile dubs receive $2350 from County Council Ask for more winter road maintenance &* & Me Dominic Doyle Mr and Mrs Dominic Doyle 50th wedding anniversary Students seek support for project at old Pontiac Trading Post Quebec asking a reconsideration of this regulation In view of the fact that tourism is such an Important Industry.Council also felt that roads to logging operations should also be considered as necessary and that where a municipality decided that a road Is essential It should have the approval of the ftovlnoe for winter maintenance.A further motion was seconded and approved to request earlier sanding and salting of roads so that they would be usable by the citizens on their way to work before nine o'clock In the morning Instead of merely being taken care of later In the day,.This resolution Is to go to Mr Gauthier at Aylmer and also to the Minister at Quebec.Only roads to permanent dwellings will be maintained dv through Provincial grants during winter according to present regulations. The only exception to this rule Is where cattle are on a range and must be fed during the winter by use of a road which otherwise by or kad to a permanent dwelling. This situation has left many peopk with winterized cottages and other resorts without roads during winter. This also means that roads to ski lodges may not be Included for Provincial grants to winter maintenance.A motion at County Council Monday will go to the Roads Department at Roy Hérault, representing all the snowmobile clubs In Pontiac County, requested a grant of $2350 from County Council for work on skldoo trails and his request was granted by a standing vote of nineteen of the twenty five mayors at Monday's meeting. For a whlk, during the debate on this Issue, there was static between R Hérault and Vczlna ( no relation ) Mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract. There was concern about liability for any posslbk damage to property or persons on a bridge which will be bulk by the snowmobile clubs to cross the Black River.Eventually It was discovered that municipalities do not habitually carry liability for this sort of thing but nevertheless the Mayor of Waltham will take the matter to his Council for deliberation.Meanwhile, Mr Roy Hérault received his cheque for $2350 and kft for Hull where he was going to apply for a local Initl* at Ives employment grant which would brine over sixty thousand douars In wages Into this County.Engineering and planning for tne project will come from the Association d'Amenagement and the nty grant wlU go for event which commenced with Mass at St.Elizabeth t Church at 4 pm.Theb attendants were Mr Herman the Province or on An main table.Mr terc At Old Fort William In the western part of Pontiac County, the site of an historic Hudson s Bay Post is gradually falling Into ruin. This sad fact came to the attention of the grade ten students at FeHowes High School In Pe mbroke, which Is twelve miles from the site, and they decided to do something to preserve this bit of Canadians for the future.Forty of the students, under the guidance of Mr Andrew Perrault of the Social Service Department and Mr Sandy Sinclair and Mr Harry Murphy, spent a day mapping, videotaping and filming the site. While they were there some of the students Interviewed several life-long residents of the area. They then went back to school and assembled presentation which will be sent to the federal government in the form of an ap- .1 peal to solicit funds for the restoration of this once magnificent site. They fee 1 that Old F Mr Gibbons has reportedly closed this road to the public, Mr Adams was hoping County Council could assist In getting It opened again.County Council Informed Mr Aaams that It was a Municipal matter and County Council had no jurisdiction In that respect. They suggested the Municipality of Portage du Fort consult a lawyer.held Morin proposes improvements at Ste Camille Notary Donat LeGuerrler visited County Council on Monday to provide Information about the regulations regarding the registration of property transfers In Pontiac County. After hearing various complaints from municipal mayors about the cost of getting Information about property transfers and also about tne delays In aqulrlng this Information, Mr.LeGuerrler suggested that County Council ##N| the possibility of having Its own registry office in the County building.Apparently some municipalities find they must send tax bills to previous owners after property transfers have taken because they claim t registrar's records are as much as eight months behind the times. Also they claim there Is a fee exacted from the municipality to obtain the information. This they feel should be applicable to the purchaser Instead of the municipality. All municipal mayors did not find the cost ncr the delay too onerous but there was enough general dissatisfaction with the system to warrant the Warden's Intention to request a more stable and safer situation at the registry office.A Motion was sent to Quebec to object to the way the fee is being applied to the municipalities Instead of to the purchasers.Until that time no action Mayor Fitzpatrick of Allumette and Mayor Burke of Quyon. This committee also proposed a raise from $ 2500.to $3500.in pay me it to the secretary treasurer which was accepted by Council After considerable discussion It was decided that another room In the County Building should be furnished as a meeting room for use of other groups so that the council chamber would be kept for the exclusive use of County Council The finance committee recommended an amount of $1000.be earmarked for the furnishing of this meeting room and that the two councils, Campbell's Bay and Litchfkld, who use the County building for their regular monthly meetings and ekctlons each be charged a flat rate of $300.a They found It possible to reduce the county rate from .7 mills to .5 mills. This was possibk because the valuation across the nty rose from $33,692,441 last year to $35,977,617 this year, and also because there was an accumulated surplus of $20,567 which cannot be carrkd over.In making their report the finance committee noted that although there was four hundred dollars avallabk last year to the eight 4-H clubs In the County at $50.each, none had applkd for these grants and therefore the total was carried over In tte general account. After a brief discussion about the terrlbk state of repair of these ancient buildings and the uselessness of the canoe shed altogether, the twenty five mayors agreed to nelp the dents on their project. In their ktter to council, the students of Pembroke stated that they would be willing to make a presentation of their project to the know the advantages Ouyon might have, should they withdraw from Pontiac as Mrs Cote see ms to One has only to look at the Highway No.8 thru Ouyon and district to get proper answer to the question ( Would you llle Ouyon and District to be part oi a municipality outside Pontiac of Inside Pontiac Cdunty ?) ( With reference to second question: Would you like the elementant schools to he administered by a school board outside or Inside Pontiac County?) Imagine the distance our children have to travel to school ! ( To both questions the answer Is ) Outside Pontiac.olic elementary schools should be administered outside the County for everyone in the Pontiac up to and including part of Litchfield. We honestly didn’t know what the people wanted and that is why we carried out the poll. Now we know. And now they know in Quebec too, because in Quebec they read THE EQUITY.(As a footnote to the poll, as in the previous poll we found that replies were received from the most civic minded, responsible citizens of the area concerned.) Out of a total of S3 replies, the majority of which were from catholic school supporters, 80 people wished that Ouyon would remain in Pontiac County for both Municipal and School administration purposes. This response to the little opinion poll carried in this paper may not seem overwhelming in its numbers but the 96% result should indicate something to the Department of Education in Quebec as well as the Department of Municipal Affairs.PUBLISHED AS A PUBLIC SERVICE BY PONTIAC PRINTSHOP visualize. Why exclude the "good things" such as Hilton and Consolidated, Mrs Cote? That would be similar If I should say • Take the Parliament Buildings, civil service etc.out of Ottawa or take E.B.Eddy Co.and the breweries out of HulL I believe If Ouyon leaves Pontiac, they will have their welfare and their minimum wages and will pay higher taxes to cover the welfare where they are going and perhaps pay this extra amount Just F H."BUD" ROWAT GENERAL INSURANCE Complete Insurance Service including Life Insurance Phone e PONTIAC ELECTRIC INC F.E.LACOURSE.President ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR ELECTRIC UNIT HEATERS AND BASEBOARD HEATING for Commercial, Industrial, Residential and Farm Use At least it is a more representative survey than the one taken by that group in Quebec which has decided that cath- S.S.Ouyon Bus 647-3737 Res.I 647 2851 Shaw ville.Que.The scene in the courtroom at Parent Roderick inquest ELECTRICAL FIXTURES - FREE ESTIMATES " “ Phone 647-2417 # ( * C 40 ' V Dr.Wallace Hodgins Shawville, Qua GRADUATE McGILL UNIVERSITY bUARP HoDtRlttt benefit of readers of THE EQUITY and we are privileged to reproduce them here. One drawing shows Judge Labe 116 *s court with officials, members of the Quebec Police Force, la wye-3, the Oown Attorney and Mr Roderick In the witness box.The other drawing is a close up of two groups, at top Is the Jail matron with the accused peopk and a guard and below are lawyers Lava Ike, Le teller, Renaud.Ste Mark and a court secretary. Not perhaps the most flattering caricatures of these but a graphic description of the court scene. The pre liminary inquest Into the September shooting of John Albert Parent of Norway Bay was held at Campbell's Bay last week with Judge Avila Labelk officiating. There had beoi a coroners Inquest earlier but the preliminary inquest was delayed whik psychiatrists determined wheth* or not the widow of the deceased was mentally fit to stand triaL C.DOUGLAS McLEAN, Insurance Agent MR* PNRKM SURGEON DENTIST PHONE 7-2638 SHAWVILLE FIRE Matron AUTO LIFE ?rm I A J PONTIAC CLEANERS "YOU* CLOTHES P.O.Box 299 SHAWVILLE Phone 647-3821 £ THE HON.PAUL A.MARTINEAU P C, Q C Barrister and Solicitor Box 219 Campbells Bay Tel.648-5503 102 Main St., -Hull Tel.771-7415 SCSI FRÎEN3 ODORLESS CLEANING M SHAWVILLE PHONE 647-2577 r After several delays, this was established and Mrs Judith Parent and also Clayton Roderick were eventually brought to court and officially charged non capital murder.A DR.R.J.CHRETIEN I.A., D.D.S.DENTAL SURGEON PHONE 648-5955 CAMPBELLS BAY — OFFICE HOURS — 8 â.m.to 6 p.m.DAILY CLOSED SATURDAYS LLOYD KENSLEY EQUIPMENT RENTALS LOCAL end LONG DISTANCE FLOAT SERVICE MOVING OF HOUSES P.O.Box 31 - CAMPBELL'S BAY - Phone 648-5600 ; Inspection Is an important part of the railway's maintenance program. All tracks are carefully inspected at regular intervals- main line tracks from one to five times each week, depending on speed of trains and density of traffic on the respective territories to ensure they are safe.Patrolmen are assigned to sections with special problems, such as rockfalls, sometimes on a round-the-clock basis.Other such areas may have rock and slide detector fencing. The use of better and stronger track components also increased the life of rail lines, resulting In kss maintenance work.Welded rail, for example, was introduced In 1958, and Is now used on about 1,000 miles of main line CP Rail track. With the rails welded into lengths of up to 1,440 feet, the number of joints are substantially reduced, lessening wear and tear which results from train wheels bouncing across the gap between rail ends. The characteristic clickety __ may be disappearing from the railway scene, out so is the rail damage that accompanies the sound.CP Rail Is continually Involved In research to find new maintenance aids and procedures. In conjunction with the National Research Council, the railway's engineering department developed a kerosene-fired heater to keep power track switches operational through Canadian winter. It's now widely used by other railroads across the continent. The NRC and the railway also collaborated to develop a rail heater used In the laying of continuous welded ralL this a r i 12 lÊ 1BÈ ACCESSORY KIT SWWVtEÜST ' -iMTs imitas ¦ i, LiS V?Mèsb I2IÎ m < •« 77 1-v, «T to
