mentally sick and many of them are all hut forgotten by their families. While many relatives of patients at the Douglas do visit frequently and do bring things along to make life a little brighter for them, there are always others who get little outside attention and for whom Christmas is just a bewildering day among many such. The Eghjity TO THE EDITOR School name “Founded In 188?' PROPOSAL Perhaps it was not entirely stunning but certainly it was startling to hear the Centennial official announce publicly at Bryson Monday night that there was all sorts of co-operation with Federal and Municipal people on the part of Provincial centennial people. As everyone in Pontiac knows, a modest County Centennial project which had been approved both Federally and Municipally was chopped down at the zero hour by an comprehensible technicality imposed by the Province.Although at the time of the chop, it seemed to many shocked and bewildered people that some ninety nine property owners in Shawville were to blame tor the calamity, it has since become quite clear that they were not voting against the project, but were voting against the appropriation of sixty thousand dollars by the municipality, after that same money had been promised by these '‘co-operative" Provincial centennial officers. In my opinion, Mr Argue mediate families that it even in- cludes complete strangers, cloistered perhaps forever within hospital walk.in- These strangers include children of one year and citizens of ninety. The bundles intended for them should be labelled with sex and age of a suitable recipient. For instance, on a doll write "girl age one to 12”, on a toy car you would write "boy any age” on a lipstick or dusting powder "teenage girl”, ort a box of soap "lady”, on a pack of cards “man" and so forth.25 Years Ago in The Equity November 27th, 1941 On Tuesday evening Nov 11 about 35 friends gathered at the home of Mr.and Mrs John Dods of by the “co-operative" Provincial officials. If it hadn’t broken the back of the camel there is no doubt in the world that another straw would have been found which would. So much for the famous co-operation.That whole episode has gone down as one more expensive lesson in history. It would have gone unmentioned but for on the matter by the man the special emphasis placed from Ottawa. But out of it all came a ray of hope.Mr.Prevey, who surely didn’t fully understand the local situation Centennial-wise, did seem to know some other things about Pontiac. He proposed for us an alternate Centennial project: one which would cost no money at all and would depend on each member of the County to achieve.Mr.and Mrs.Lome Sharpe shoes are needed at the Douglas at all times of peacefully for the benefit of all "or words to that effect was Mr.Prevey’s proposal. This suggestion revealed a knowledge that here in Pontiac there are French and English speakers, Roman Catholics and Protestants, who could sit down to a banquet together and enjoy an evening. The suggestion also revealed a knowledge that to carry this living amicably on to the next stage—planning amicably—would be monumental task worthy of being undertaken as a Centennial project. If we can do it we’ll have achieved something to the perpetual benefit of Pontiac County and all our descendants. It’s a worthy project but already, on thinking it over there is some doubt that our people here are strong enough to make it work. The first plan which comes to mind, of course, is the current school planning. With one Department of Education it would seem simple enough for one secondary school to be thinkable. All it would take would be a recognition on the parts of minority groups that the majorities are also human. This shouldn’t be too hard in Pontiac County where everyone is a member of both groups. To begin with La Belle Province itself represents a minority in English speaking Canada. Then the English speaking people in Pontiac are a minority in La Belle Province. Then the French speaking people in Pontiac are a minority in English speaking Pontiac.Religiously, the minority pattern is similar so we wind up with every single person here being a member of one or another minority group, being accepted politely; and also being in a position to accept another group which is even more minor than his own.Six ribbons won by Schmidt's Doberman Mr.G.A.Howard went to Mountain View last week to witness the graduation exercises G.C harles Schmidt of Shaw- 0f the Flying co-operative, attending when the teacher speaks, answering when spoken to, refraining from laughing at others, showing all the courtesy to the teacher that any adult deserves, and speaking only well of the teacher outside the classroom.Alright, that does seem a lot to ask.But when they realize that they are the ones who will benefit from such good behaviour it might be proposed on selfish grounds if no other.Parents could help too. When the kids come home and say “Johnny got the strap today” as if that was the sole noteworthy occurance of the school day, the parent might counter with and what happened during the other three hundred and fifty nine minutes?” It might be discovered that a lot of education took place in there somewhere. If we just don't talk about it, it won’t necessarily go away but if strapping becomes less sensational the teachers might seek other ways to impress the pupils.Anything is worth a try! So whether he knows it or not the challenge Mr.Prevey tossed out at the banquet in Bryson will indeed be a monument to Pontiac County if it is achieved. We know we can live together. Now let's just put forth that extra effort required to plan together.on SMARTEN UP !
