Office Department, Ottawa # J'l • ALL KINDS OF COOPERATION / i That’s what was needed and that's what the Directors got to put over the grand official opening of the new agricultural building on Shaw-ville Fair Grounds last Saturday night. When you consider the cost in time and money (not to mention energy!), involved in preparing a horse for racing or showing and then transporting it many miles, showing it and then treking home, there was really a lot of effort put into the event by people from many miles away in all directions. Then add to that the work of all the local committees and individuals and you have a demonstrated store of interest which should spell success to to all future ventures connected with the new building. With nothing to gain but a few more bright ribbons for their collections, a hundred horsemen and horsewomen put their animals through their paces, providing a splendid entertainment for a thousand onlookers. The hall itself was spruced up into beautiful conditon with windowwashing going on up to the very last minute and hand rails being installed as the visitors were already inspecting the premises. All the introductions from the platform, made by President Arthur Kilgour, were well applauded, especially that of Secretary Nellis Horigins who with his wife’s great assistance has been kept very busy tying up all the strings involved in the new building But if a record had been kept it would show that the loudest acclaim was for Russell Judd who risked a lot and came out victorious as the contractor for the most ambitious and functionally useful building in this County. The money realized by admissions to the evening event was considerably augmented by money made both by admissions and at the booth during the afternoon’s racing events.Every cent concerned was turned over to the Building Committee and it is a credit to Pontiac’s harness racers that top notch officials were happy to give their time to make the day a success.Cattlemen, who had themselves raised over $4,000 for the building fund last month, were conspicuous in their support of the big horse day, both afternoon and evening; one more demonstration of the sort of cooperation which can be achieved here when something worthwhile is at stake.35 * • K ri11 ## 'WRvgT v J ïfti >: ' at tf'^i #> -< •» W / / f a ^ hJi Fort Shawville For Appointment Phone 35 W.HOWARD PRIDHAM I The omission of the words I “all or a«me" in everyday I conversation, seems to me, to I be the source of much strife I and misunderstanding, I As an illustration you have heard it said, that red haired people are bad tempered, this is a grossly exaggerated state- I ment.So far as I know the necessary statistical research into the association between red hair and bad temper has never been done; and if it were done it would surprise me If red haired people were i more bad tempered than those not red haired There are many other statement^ or cliches which are just as ambiguous.such as, “the city child is more intelligent than the country child, the Americans are individualists, farmers are independent, grass is cow feed, teen-ager^ are bad today, or horses eat hay.“ The above examples give you an idea of the ambigu.ty of phrases.Would it not be clearer and less contentious if the following were used instead: Some red haired people are bad tempered; Some city children are more clever than some (alb country children; some Americans are individualists or Russians think that all Americans are individualists; all farmers in Pontiac are independent, but some are dependent upon good mark-1 ets to retain their independency; some grasses make good cow feed or all cows eat some grass; some teen-agers are bad in the eyes of some people, or all teenagers are bad in the eyes of all people; all horses eat hay or some horses do not eat hay.I suggest that all white and black have some gray within them and that absolute facts are the exception instead of the rule.It reminds me of a story in one of Willtam James books “he was out on a camping trip and he took a stroll into the woods, on returning the rest of the party were in a ferocious philosophical depute suppose a squirrel is on one side of a tree trunk and a man is on the other side. The man starts going around the tree, but however fast he goes around, the squirrel goes in the same direction so that it keeps the trunk of the tree between the man and itself. The question was whether the man went round the squirrel or not.The disputants were evenly divided and were not coming to a solution of the problem. They appealed to William James, who replied, it is not a question of facts but of words, of how one is to use the words “go around”.The purpose of this discussion is to bring to light, the need, to use words correctly in our main media of communication and I have found that two handy words (tools) are all and some, which if used with discretion will aid discussion and avoid misunderstanding.I speak as a layman and I think that the laymans part of any discussion is to weaken the wine of the experts and make sure that his voice is heard and understood.Ottawa, Ontario 437 MacArthur Road Carried O.K.O’Donnell, Sec.-Treas OPTOMETRIST Glasses insured against loss or breakage ANNOUNCEMENT
