FOR EXPANSION The attention of our readers is drawn to the advertisement which appeared last week in The Equity announcing the availability of loans up to $25,000 for small businesses.This is the result of federal government legislation enacted at the end of 1960 to enable small businesses to obtain the financial backing required for their expansion.Not only will the legislation make it possible for existing businesses to carry out needed expanion programs, but it will also enable new businesses to get started.In this area, the urgent need is for good tourist accomodation.The new legislation will no doubt encourage the setting up of such accomodation here before too long — indeed many enquiries along these lines have already been received by federal member Paul Martineau, whose advice to all who seek this information is to talk it over with a bank manager.Small business makes up a large percentage of the economy of this country.It is encouraging to note that the federal government has now recognized the importance of this seemingly small cog in the national production wheel; and further, that it has done the one thing most badly and urgently needed by small business — by giving access to capital funds in sufficiently large quantity to be effective.Yours sincerely Len Coyne Bryson, Jan.30 61 Deep River Reeve Plans Meeting For Grand Canal Hugh Young, who at pres-1^ nol havc qulte enough, „ .Reeve Peter McConnachle ent Is attending Macdonald polnts for a two game high er*“L of Ottawa, were guests of Deep River Is organizing a College, In the Agricultural ^rize Iot their son and daughtermeeting to be held In Ottawa dass.topped his class in the ‘ ,fln.„rv 2ath Mr »nd Mrs.Royce within the next three weeks to Xmas exams, another local boy n V.=vt«ned J PrenderKMt- “‘Tr % ‘nT'Xr- ltorn" pl,ced ÎS JtoSr,* of claiming the child as an other Pembroke team.They tax deduction for the also were not high enough in | The Clarendon School Board previous year by having him points to be a 2-game high has awarded the contract for after Instead of before the | winner. building the new school house midnight hour.This disadvant- Last Wednesday, Friday and (No.11) at Morehead to Mr age is somewhat offset by gifts Saturday featured the Men’s P.Gallagher of Bristol.Price from various local commercial ] invitational Bonsptcl here.The 940.00.establishments.This year’s first two-game winner Wednesday At Irma, Alta., on Jan 18 by baby In Pontac Hospital wound was Archie Atkinson of the the Rev.F C.Brothroyd Me-up with three gifts of this type Ottawa Curling Club.The two thodist pastor of Irma.Mr at latest count: a stash of milk game .h gh* j tickets from Pontiac Dairy, a skipped by: X—X—X—X Mr and Mrs.Forest Prend- 50 Yean Ago In THE EQUITY The canal, as envisaged by supporters, would bring Great Lakes shipping up the Ottawa.A model of the project Is being biult and will be displayed In Ottawa.ncome Shaw ville runner-up was Bruce Barber, son of Simon a McManus of Barber, Esq.of Clarendon, to set of nursery equipment from I Renfrew assisted by Harry Miss Maye Palmer, daughter Lamb’s and a photo of mother Crozier, George Latendresse of Thomas Palmer, Esq., Yarm.and child from the Prlntshop.| and Geo.Early. A reception was held same ev- Three game high winner on ening for the young couple at Fr'day was skipped by Harry the home of Willie T.Barber Elliott, a'ded by N E.Lindsay, | brother of the Earl Lindsay and Mel Campbell.This of course was a Renfrew team.Three game high runner up was a team from Deep River skipped by R.B.McLelland, assisted by P.Tamblyn, George Romanick and R.McLeod.Two game h.gh winner was from the Fort Coulonge Club a toast to the Lion husbands 1 -kipped by Lome Routliffe which was answered by the | with Mervln Pearson, Eddie president Doug Fulford Get-well wishes are In ordei for Mr.Fred Laframbolse wht has had pneumonia and Is now recuperating satisfactorily.Sha wville Lions Ladies Night REDUCING THE RISK groom.The Ottawa river Is lower now than It has been at this season for many years, a condition which is gradually par.alysing the milling Industries at the Chaudière.J.R.Booth has closed two mills and the Eddie Plant may be compelled to cease operations for awhile.Miss Charlotte Cahill, of Calumet Island, has been the guest of Miss Minerva Cald- It is heartening indeed to see that representations have been made to the provincial government for the establishment of a provincial "unsatisfied judgments fund” for the financial protection of those who use the highways of the province of Quebec.The good news comes that the Chambre de Commerce du District de Montreal has submitted a brief to Premier Lesage along these lines.The brief suggests that the fund be established and maintained by annual levy against those seeking application for drivers permits.The brief further suggests that those who carry insurance should pay a levy of say $1.00; and those who carry no protection should be charged five or ten dollars.Our view is that the driver who carries insurance should not be required to contribute to the fund.It should be supported entirely by those who carry no protection.However these are minor matters.The important principal is to get the government to recognize the need for the existence of such a fund; and to expedite its creation.The financial risk of driving on Quebec Highways, while not quite so dire as the physcal risk, is nevertheless little short of appalling.The sooner the government admits this, and sets corrective machinery in motion, the better.The anawville Lions Club held their ladies night in the Picanock Room of the Pontiac House on Thursday, January 2d with about 30 present.Colds and the weather accounted for a smaller crowd than usual.A delicious supper was served by Len Beaupre.Ray Sheppard accompanied the group for a lovely sing song and Dale Thomson was just as active and alert at his job as "Tail Twister'’, as he ever was.Guests were Linden Quaile and Cliff Corrigan of the Campbell’s Bay Club Quaile gave a short reading appropriate to Lionism.Mrs.Allan Black answered the toast proposed by Dale Thomson to the ladies.She also proposed i : i Davis and Joe Doyle.Saturday’s tlhree game high films were on “Wildlife" and Qlebe club High one game _*4r’ ,and Mra Donald Mc-the NHL Stanley Cup hockey dinner over the three days was . visited Mr.R.Cuth- game of 1959. | Morley Alexander’s team from1 ertson- On Saturday two Shawvllle men’s rinks attended the Fort Coulonge Bonsplel Hod gins, Borden Hodgins, Bill Hanna and Percy Belsher.Dave Still skipped the other team well.Mr.j.j.sly returned last Mr Next meeting will see the visit of the Zone Chairman Ed Foster of Beachhurg and will be held February 9th at the hotel.75 Years Ago Morley In THE EQUITY . , The new Medical Hall in consisting of Art Kilgour, Cliff portage du Fort was opened Corrigan and M.Maloney.The His Lordship the Anglican latter won one game.Morley Bishop of this diocese has set two games and defeated apart next Sunday as a day Dave’s team in one game, of thanksgving by the church Friendly aren’t they when they tor deliverance from the small get out of town?Sadly enough pox scourge In the city of they were % point short of | Montreal, being two game high winners.This weekend the ladies are high speed by his boat when the craft collided with the rowboat in which the young girl was sitting.He said that he did not see the small boat before the crash.This tragic accident is mentioned here, even at such an unseasonable time as this coldest week of the year, in the hope that the sequence of events which culminated in the death of a young Canadian will sink into the minds of those who operate power boats.This death points out the absolute necessity for all boats used for water skiing purposes to carry at least two people.One to watch the water skier; and one to watch everything else.Our opinion is that up to this time at least, the use of power boats has been treated far too casually by too many people.These boats, many of them overpowered, are placed all too frequently in the hands of children, yes, and of adults too, who apparently do not realize the extent of their responsibility.The accident described above was only one of many similar tragedies and even more near-tragedies, that happened last summer.Others like it will happen next summer.It is our hope that the people of this area will take their responsibility seriously in this matter and promote the principles of water safety to the limit on the many water playgrounds to be found on our doorstep.won At Lower Litchfield . . . . , , .Thursday the 21st, Ellen Paul, having their bonsplel, so we beloved wife of Duncan Rob- are looking forward to as good lnson died at the age of 33 sportsmanship as ever, good years.Iun’ Mr A W.McKechnle, of the “Hello Bill, haven’t K? ^ ^ seen you for years.Who are Mr Edward Meredith of Qu_ you working for now?¦ yon was in Bryson Tuesday.“J: a™;
