they thought of golden treasure and of buried hoards, I ween As they went to the locality where Pontiac had been.But a very curious cavity was all that could be seen.But having penetrated many feet into the ground, A rusty ancient engine with some rails were also found, Into which a farmer's body seemed inextricably wound.They brought this aged skeleton to light with greatest care, For these learned antiquarians were very well aware They had made a grand discovery which would make the whole world stare Yet, two things sorely puzzled them, though learned men were they Were-why his jaw was hanging in that sad discouraged way And why his spine was twisted, was most difficult to say, And in a well-worn pocket book, to keep its sides apart, They observed a piece of paper; but what must have made them start • \\ Was that.in his tattered moccasins was found his shrivelled heart \\ And on that piece of paper the farmer did relate In strangely oblique characters which are long since out of date, V An account of the catastrophe that caused the county's fate.m views ] 1 ion The prospective loss of the rail passenger vice in the County of Pontiac is a very serious thing, and should be resisted to the limit by everyone.The argument has been advanced that with the existing train timetable, the passenger service is almost useless, and with this we agree.But if the service were suspended, there would then be no opportunity to pursuade the CPR to change the train schedule so that it would be useful.We must, we believe, hang on to the passenger service at all costs.It is vital to the continuing development of the County, and its loss would deal a serious economic blow to'each une 0T !ÏS It should also be recalled that the County of Pontiac paid to the railroad the sum of $100,000 as a bonus incentive for the construction of a line through Pontiac County, which, it was hoped, would link up with the CPR in the vicinity of Pembroke.It is worth noting that the sum paid over was a much larger sum in the 1890s than $100,000 is today.To say that it was comparable in amount to a million dollars today is, we believe, a fair representation of the situation.Unfortunately for the County, a great deal of trouble and expense arose out of the original issue was way to the Privy Council.The upshot was that a second bond issue had to be raised to cover the enormous additional sums which were required.ser » d t PONTIAC'S LAST TEACHER When the poor old farmer's body had crumbled into dust, And they'd bottled up his ashes to be treasured with the just, The wearied antiquarians from their labors rested, when Lo, the air was dark with pinions not of birds but flying men! And both east and west horizon seemed to darken and to teem With thousands of vehicles, electric, air and steam, Up the Great Canal came workmen at a somewhat slower rate, Armed with shovels, picks and levers all prepared to excavate; And ere the frosts of Autumn scorched the flowers on hill and plain Our poor discouraged Pontiac saw the light of day again.Ah, the scene of desolation that met the startled gaze, As they searched in house and hovel for the records of old days THE OLD FARMER'S STORY We were once a happy people, free from sorrow, debt and wrong; » But from no earthly Eden does the tempter tarry long.In politicians' speeches he contrived our souls to cheat, He offered us the apple, we took it end did eat Our wily benefactors shook us warmly by the hand, Praised our calves, our cows and horses, our houses and our land; O'er our babies, wives end daughters, they made a mighty fuss; And it pleased us very Highly that they thought so much of us.Why they loved our whole connection; but one thing was now required To make a model people.Would wo vote as they desired.We should have a glorious county, when a railroad we should I interior of the building, ornament and taste did lack 9**' ., ,. .I Save mid-way twixt floor and ceiling an expanse of sombre And a chicken from each farmer every year would pay the black debt.But one building in particular they marvelled much to see.Andjts sad dejected aspect aroused their curiosity, There were queer fantastic figures that were thickly carved o'er All that weather beaten structure and its old and broken door.Forms of bird, and fish, and reptile, awful forms of fiends and men That were not in earth nor heaven, nor in the waters under i them.Long the'spectacled professors gravely gazed and questioned if Those strangely grotesque figures were Egyptian hieroglyph.of bonds through which the bonus money raised.The matter went to litigation, all the Covered o'er with countless figures, and the searchers sadly sighed."Here they figured on the bonus and they figured till they died" Thus it was that $214,650 was ultimately raised through a second bond issue.The proceeds were used to redeem the original issue, pay accumulated interest charges, and all the legal costs which arose from the litigation.The new bonds were forty year bonds carrying an interest rate of 4V2.When these bonds were finally redeemed in 1933, the municipalities of Pontiac had paid out the rather staggering sum of $416,784.30 in interest on the bonds and in repayment of the bond principal.Clarendon Township paid over $83,000 of this total, Bristol paid $60,000, Leitch-field paid over $31,000, and so on through the County.Under these circumstances we find it difficult to see the grounds on which the railway can in conscience withdraw the passenger service.the Home & School Association.Finally, there is the matter of isolation in winter.It happens every winter that Highway 8 gets blocked with snow sometimes for a few hours, and sometimes for two or three days.We don’t anticipate any early change in this situation, and in such times, our only link with Ottawa is the rail service.If we allow the CPR passenger service to be abandoned we are commiting ourselves to periods of complete isolation.The railway wishes to discontinue the passenger service because the service is not profitable.It is usual for a business to so arrange its operations that it does produce a profit from the services it offers.It is a quite unusual course to deliberately cut off a source of business thereby cutting back the revenue and increasing the overhead loading on the remaining services.It seems rather obvious that the railroad would get lots of paying customers for its passenger cars if it would change the hours of arrival in and departure from Ottawa to coincide with normal business hours.In this way, commuters from the Pontiac would be able to use the train, which they can’t now do.The response would, we feel, be more than gratifying.Interest, interest, compound interest, till one could not even think Of having in possession such a vast amount of chink.The nineteenth century prisons had everything to please An ordinary sinner, but what criminals were these?I In a seat an aid professor sat him down to gaze about, And it took the whole committee half-an-hour to pull him out.The found in great profusion though their use is now unknown, In various lengths and sizes, cylinders and slabs of stone.At the far end of the building 'neath the rubbish and debris There they found a wasted body that had long defied decay, Beside whom the poor old farmer was quite porpoise like in size, Though the structure of the cranium proved that he wondrous wise.But the eyeless awful sockets still with horror seemed to glance At a very ancient copy of the PONTIAC ADVANCE.At the minutes of a meeting where THE POWERS THAT was had said; ~‘ "We'll reduce the teachers' salaries till the bonus shall be paid" They proved, too, that his diet had got so very thin There was nothing but a hollow, where digestion once had been."Could it be," they sadly questioned, "could it be, ah surely not That in the nineteenth century here the little ch ^ Costly piles of stone and marble sheltered knave, "assassin, fool, While any wretched hovel did the children for a school.They buried the Last Teacher where the baby birches vyave, And the howling winds of winter sigh and sob above his grave.was There are other grounds for requesting the continuance of the service, which when taken separately are not of monumental significance, but when added to the other factors, are most definitely significant.In this category is the question of bringing children in to The High School in Shawville from Fort Coulonge, Davidson and Waltham.Without the train these children may be deprived of their secondary education.This particular point, if found worthy, could most effectively be presented to the Board bv s taught GEORGE K.BROWN V Thvredsy, March If, lfSt.TW EQUITY (impbell'Olf Hotel Summerville and fam ly : Surprised By Friends I Shawville Holes Al Quilting Parly | a Miscellaneous Shower for Miss Corraln Zahodnlk on Friday, March 13.There were eight girls taking > gins, part In this ceremony Mrs.Sylvia Hone of London, Ottawa, spent a few days with Ont., Is spending this week her grandparents, Mr and with Mr and Mrs Harry Hod- Mrs.David T.Hodglns.Miss Donna Blesenthal of Mrs.J.L Muir and family By Mrs.Esther Quailr are spending two weeks In Miss Edna Sparling of Ot- Warwick, Que., with Mrs.Muir’s tawa visited with her parents, Mr.and Mrs.Roy Sparling over the weekend.Mrs Armstrong was hold-parents, Mr.and Mrs.Maillot j ing a quilting at her home on Mr.Fred Sparling of Regina, | her birthday when friends and neighbours decided to call and surprise her.One by one about I Best birthday wishes to Mr ers, Is staying for a few days I surprise™!^was"^ 'W' H (:orrlgan* R R *• 8haw" with his cousin, Mr. Roy sented with a card covered Sparling and visiting his rela-1 with dimes one for each year.189th birthday on Friday, March A pleasant evening was spent 120th.chatting and singing Mrs At an eleven o’clock service, I Humphrey sister of Mr Wlli- Sunday March 22nd the St hun Armstrong who Is ninety I Torance Alexander, will be three years young was their glad to know word has been land was able to Join In the|received of their safe arrival fun singing with the rest.Re-tlsmal Font to the church In freshments were served by the I Miss Gal Letts, who Is In memory of the late Mr.F.E. ladles.After singing good night training at Ottawa Civic Hoa- Henderson, who was, for some ^les they all left tor home, i pltal, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr.and Mrs.Leonard Letts.Sask.who came to Ottawa with a delegation of Prairie Farm- Dr.and Mra.Bradshaw returned Sunday night from Philadelphia where they attended the flower show They stayed with relatives of the Drs.while they were there.Mr.and Mrs.Joseph Me Oahern and Mr.and Mrs.Clifford Lawn are spending a week In New York where they will attend the at.Patrick’s Day parade.mm ORBE ville on the occasion of his tlves and friends around.Friends of Rev.and Mrs A BEAUTIFUL GIFT — FOR A BEAUTIFUL EASTER Andrews United Church Sun- day School will present a Bap In Egypt, to which they travelled by air.They are resuming their work as Missionaries, In the Canadian Holiness Mission- POTTED PLANTS ?time, Superintendent of the | Sunday School.Rev R.Percl-val will conduct tne service.Bryson Notes LILIES Mrs.Austin McDowell spent the past week visiting at the home of Mr.and Mrs.Alex Olmstead.Mrs.Olmstead en- aCr°" thC rWer i honorThe^ mlth%Shd^ from Bryson. | Thursday, March 12.Mrs Amede Poisson spent the week end with relatives In Ottawa.Mr and Mrs Chas Brown and family of Ottawa, and Mr and Mrs Raymond Cahill and Jane, Pembroke spent the week end with Mr and Mrs Alphonse Cahill, Calumet Island.>^d Mr.Len Summerville of Arcadia Valley, Alberta, who came to Ottawa with the delegation of Pralr e Farmers, arrived In Campbell's Bay Wednesday to visit his sister, Mrs.Herbert Martin.Mrs.Martin had not seen her brother since the winter of 1930, at which t me he was not married.Since .then he has married and has • w*s killed when his plane crashed.Clayton Brown was born In May, 1933, the son of W lliard Brown and Evelyn Kelly.He was born in the house now owned by Ray Bowie.He Is survived by his wife and Mr.Ernest Stevenson and sma 1 son, his parents, two Mr.Len Summerville spent Frl- brothers, Arthur and Donald day In Forrester’s Falls where and two sisters, Lorn a and they visited with Mr.Arthur Lorna ( Correction In last weeks news Item;
