[" if! * m VMM sii fW tW* 99 Voice Of The Pontiac 66 Shaw ville, Quebec, Thursday, Sept.13, 1956.By Subscription No.16, 74th.Year.Text of Opening Address by Hon 6 Fanteux Record Crowds Attend ShawviHe Centennial Fair Regional exhibitions just as much as the larger national ones have always been an excellent means of bringing to the fore the value and progress of agriculture and industry. They constitute more than a mere attraction; they are veritably a stimulating agent for all those who are interested in the advancement of our methods of work, the scientific improvement of our agriculture and industrial products in short, our assuredly increasing prosperity.Accepted Without Hesitation It is therefore evident why men with authority, whether it be on the municipal, provincial or federal level, have pressing reasons to be interested in such beneficial i Exhibition. You will readily understand, therefore, the motives which prompted me to accept without hesitaton, to come as a representative of the civil authority and officially inaugurate this 100th.exhibition of the Pontiac Agricultural Society in this beautiful setting of ShawviHe.To visit the various exhibits and to admire their artistic presentation is not only pleasing to the eye.It also provides an occasion for useful and fruitful meditation. If we consider the number of important industries that were boro, that developed and.prospered in our country during the last 100 years, we are astonished by the variety and scope of them. The time at my disposal does not even permit an enumeration of our diversified industrial activity of which we have, rightly, so much reason to be proud.Agriculture Basis Of Prosperity The results are perhaps not so evident if we consider the problem of agriculture. It is a problem which interests all classes of society and one which forms the basis of all the other industries.Actually, it is the very foundation of our general prosperity. Now, a look at our most recent statistics tells us that our rural population which made up, 100 years ago, 70% of our entire population, numbers no more than 20% today. On the other hand, the cities and towns have drained our rural areas and now constitute 80%of our peoples.Drain To Cities Deplorable It may be admitted that mechanization on the farm enables a smaller number Of farmers to perform, today, as much, if not more- work than the tillers of the soil of old. But, surely, it is deplorable to find our agricultural population depleted to such an extent.Too many people from the country and in particular the younger generation cannot resist the lure of life in the cties which, alas too often, provides relatively mediocre jobs in comparison to the ones they leave behind.ISqyor Emmerson Cotie pres-1 time Addling spiced up the other -ented the Key to ttie Village of wise amateur program put on by ShawviHe to The Honorable Gas- Vinton's Bill Grace and the Hear-pard Fauteaux, Lt.Governor of ty Girls.Campbell’s Bay’s Mike the Province of Quebec; the lar- Maloney gest crowd ever to assemble on | Quartet with Otter Lake’s Gail Fort Coulonge’s Bill to attention while The Queen was I Kenny.Shawville’s Lucille Hod-played on the bagpipes; Mrs.Jas.gins and the Dickson Trio and Riley, 106, was driven in a white that little boy from the Bay who convertible to cut the.ribbon; I is going places—Lloyd (taps) Tel-Vertal (Pres.) then, that our young men and women so despise the noble work in the fields? There is no doubt that the farming career entails hard work, which seems unending, that it calls for renunciation, courage and frugality. But, my friends, it is a healthy career. And it is one peculiarly adapted to ensure independence and physical well being, as well as that much sought after equilibrium of intelligence and judgment, peace of mind and the satisfaction of a job well done, outdoors, in happy surroundings.Aspects To Stress I wonder if the organizers of our exhibitions should not stress that aspect a little more in order to bring out, on the one hand, the value, the beauty, the calm of life on the farm where man is his own boss soaked in sun and fresh air, king at home* shouldering his responsabilises to the nation in an atmosphere of utmost freedom; and, on the other hand, the feverish activity of life in our cities, breathing air polluted by gasoline fumes and smoke, living in an atmosphere of promiscuity which engenders so much physical and moral danger, and where the claims of employer and employee all too often create working conditions full of bitterness.I take this occasion to express my fervent hope that the profession of farming will be better understood and appreciated.I sincerely hope that our young men will realize more and more the unquestionable advantages of farm life over city life.and around the grandstand stood Johnston, After the stage show came the institutions as your Quyon’s Annual Fall Fair is in Already, on Thursday afternoon, - A ^ the Pontiac races had
