[" 1 \\ 99 « Voice Of The Pontiac By Subscription Shuwville, Quebec, Thursday, June 16th, 1955 No.1.73rd Year CHAMBERS REQUEST INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION ?Technical Schools And Road Improvements Civic Centre Proposed By Campbell's Bay C Of C Hospital Week Drive Sparked By 60 Canvassers Nine resolutions were adopted at the Union of Chambers of Commerce of Western Quebec annual meeting held Wednesday at Ste.Cecile de Masham.The creation of technical schools in Western Quebec was urged for domestic science, agriculture and forestry, as well as a school for guides and a systm of licensing guides.It was also ur^ed that guides be prevented from carrying arms while performing their duties.That the severity of the fish and game laws should be increased and the law rigidly enforced, were further suggestions which became resolutions at this meeting.Othr resolutions regarding fish and game laws were that the Federal District Commission restock trout lakes in the Gatineau Park and put boats on some of these lakes, that wild life receive greater protection, that the number of fish arid game wardens should be increased, that lakes streams and forests should be examined with a view to restocking with fish and game, and that the severity of the fish and game laws be increased and law be rigidly enforced.Another resolution requested the Federal District Commission to consider the appointment of one or two more French speaking Canadians to the Commission.This resolution was based on the fact that a large portion of the Western part of Quebec is no longer represented on the Commission, following the resignation of Dr Leduc of Gatineau.Dr.Leduc's position concerning the price paid to farmers of the Gatineau for pulp wood was supported by the meeting.A resolution was* adopted requesting provision of the law which excludes bank and Central Mortgage loans from rebate privileges to be amended to bring such loans within the provisions of the rebate privilege.Provision is made in the laws' of Quebec for the rebate to the borrower of interest charges on housing loans which are in excess of 2%.The law provides that such rebates are not available on loans' granted by Central Mortgage or the chartered banks.It was resolved that laws governing the operation of trucks in Quebec should be amended to bring them into line with the laws of Ontario and the West.Road improvements were suggested on the Papineauville - Duhamel highway, (Continued on Page Twelve) its reforestation planning.Donat LeGuemer announced that a group of busiessmen from Montreal and Quebec will visit Pontiac County on July 1.A committee has been appointed to greet this delegation.The committee chairman will be President Paul Martineau with two others to be named by him.The Chamber discussed ways and means by which a civic centre could be financed and built in Campbell’s Bay.It was concluded that it would pay for itself if it were to have a theatre and a fire hall.Grants would likely be avail-able from the Province for the fire hall and for the civic centre.The fire hall, if constructed would also cut fire insurance rates in the village.A committee was appointed to look into every phase of the project, and to contact the ML A, Mr.Raymond Johnson, to find out what grants, if any, -would be forthcoming.It was also decided to invite the Mayor of Campbell's Bay and all members of Council to the next meeting in order to discuss the matter informally.Two new members joined the Chamber at Monday night’s meeting.% These were W.T.Mousseau, Poston aster, Campbell's Bay and James McCuaig, Brysion.Twenty members attended the meeting.The Chamber of Commerce of Campbell’s Bay met for its regular monthly meeting in Campbell’^ Bay on Monday night.James McCuaig of Bryson attended the meeting and spoke to the group on reforestation.At its meeting last week.County Council established a committee on reforestation.The Chamber of Commerce formed a similar committee, following Mr.McCuaig’s?talk, for the purpose of lending County Council all possible assistance in The headquarters* of the drive is at the home of Dr.Pokes, Shaw-Ville (Phone 340 > where any information or desire for help may be phoned Let us keep up the good work until every dollar possible may be brought in for the work of our hospital.One thing that is being proved by the Community Hospital Drive for funds has been that the people of East Pontiac are heartily sympathetic to the hospital; and are eager to keep it worthing successfully in the community.Dr.A F.Pokes, who is in charge of the Drive, and is appointing canvassers throughout the county has had great success in this work and by the middle of this week will have 60 canvassers with their receipt books going to the various homes.The territory being covered extends from Luskville on the East to Waltham on the West; and all canvassers report that they have been very kindly received by those in the homes that they visit.Most of the canvassers will finish their work this week although a few may have to carry over into next week.Prograss reports that aie coming in are most encouraging.From four communities, where canvassers had not been appointed, because the size of the task in covering the county there came requests for canvassers books phoned in.Five times, requests have come in for more books, by canvassers who had filled their, books, and needed more to finish the task.All seem enthusiastic at their work.The first to finish and bring in his report was Keith Draper, on the Elmside district.He brought in a great report getting 27 members; who not only paid their membership fee but gave special donations in many cases and he received a total of $41.00 in cash.While they have not finished their work as yet, ten canvassers have officially reported that they have passed the $50 mark in their in^ dividual canvass.Dr.Pokes has still on Wednesday 15 persons to appoint as canvassers in most of these places west of Campbell’s Bay.$ # Accompanied by David Dickson, President of Pontiac Community Hospital, Dr.A.F.Pokes attended a meeting of Campbell's Bay Hospital Auxiliary.As head of the current Hospital Week drive for funds for the Hospital, Dr Pokes addressed the group with the object of securing canvassers for the Campbell's Bay area.In his address.Dr.Pokes stressed the fact that, while most people who use the facilities of the Pontiac Community Hospital are able to pay and do pay their bills, there are some who simply have not the financial resources to pay.When it has been proved either by the local council or by the court, that someone cannot pay.the hospital bill is split three ways.The Province pays a portion, the municipal council pays a portion, and the hospital stands the rest of it.With people coming to the Hospital from Waltham, from Calumet Island, Otter Lake.Beech-grove and all intermediate points, the number of b ils which the hospital is obliged to stand a part of each year, is substantial.To help meet these, and other costs, a drive for funds is now going forward.Dr.Pokes appealed to the ladies of the Auxiliary to conduct the drive in Campbell's Bay.He pointed out to them that the drive was designed to do two things: 1.To obtain more members for the hospital, so that more people would take an active interest in the affairs of the hospital.The membership fee is one dollar per year.2.To obtain donations to the hospital to help meet its expenses.Following the appeal by Dr.Pokes, the Auxiliary, under the Chairmanship of Mrs.Paul Martineau, voted unanimously to conduct the drive.The following canvassers for funds were appointed: Mrs.Lawrence Smith, Mrs.Chas.Bolam.Mrs.Wilkinson, Mrs.Harold Smith, Mrs.Carty.Mrs.Martineau, Mrs.Bert Smith and Mrs.Andrew Flood.Rev.P.R.Stote World Application Most Essential Bristol Council Guests Of Norway Bay Group Rev.P.Raymond Stote, speaking at the National Farm Radio Forum Convention Banquet last Thursday at Pine Lodge, said that the fbture of Farm Forum depended upon three things, the third of which he deemed the most important.First was people.The right kind of people doing the right kind of things.Second was ideas.Ideas' big enough to overcome differences which grow up between people.Third was world application.Does Farm Forum exist to get for the farmer what he wants or to give the world what it needs'* This serious note was relieved by Lincoln Dewar of Prince Edward Island who, in his laply, mentioned that all we can say for sure about the future of Farm Forum is that it lies ahead of us! Banquet chairman S.Wyman MacKechnie then introduced Gordon MacMillan who, with a hard working committee of local people had been responsible for the welcoming and entertaining of the delegates*.Those from the distant provinces were loudest in their applause, expressing their appreciation of the tour of Pontiac farms, the picnic at Bryson, the moonlight ciuise and square dance, the gifts of Pontiac honey and Pontiac maple syrup, the taxi service to near and distant points and the banquet.With loudspeakers arranged outside and inside Pine Lodge, the large gathering was able to split up.some sitting outy.de under the pines and others congregating in the conference room to hear the main speakers of the evening.Don Austin and Pete Stewart of Nova Scotia and Bruce Ayearst of Quyon, Quebec, performed an impromptu g a el ic song before Dr.H.H.Ha n n am introduced Dr.E A.Corbett, recently returned from Jamaica.Dr.Corbett's descriptions of the adult education program being carried out in Jamaica sounded very much like a description of Farm Forum at its very best.He said that the true values of Farm Forum are hand to measure.What happens to people’s hearts and minds as a result of the searching questions brought up in the Forums cannot be ascertained.Dr.Corbett quoted the famed Dr.Albert Schweitzer in closing when he said “You must give some time to your fellow men for remember you don’t live in a world aM your own.Your brothers are there too.” Grant Elliott, in thanking Dr.Corbett, said that Farm Forum (Continued on Page Twelve) Directors of the Norway Bay Municipal Association held a banquet in Scobie House, Norway Bay last Thursday night, following a .our of the Norway Bay Area to which Mayor Beattie of Bristol Township and the Township Councillors had been invited.Mayor Hilliard Beattie and three of his Councillors were able to be present and were the guests of honor at the banquet.Guest speaker was David Dickson of The Equity, who gave a short talk on the problems of operating a small weekly newspaper.Banquet chairman was Mr.J.A.E.Cowley, who stated that the purpose of the banquet was to bring members of Council together with the Directors of the Association so that they might get to know each other better and get to understand each othei's problems better.Chairman Cowley assured the guests from Bristol Township that the Association was deeply interested in the welfare of Bristol.In furtherance of this Don’t Forget Your Parcels - Trecartin Likening the first nine years of school to a train journey, Mr Frank Trecaitin, speaking to the graduating class of the Campbell's Bay Intermediate School, reminded the students not to leave their parcels on the train at the end of the journey.These parcels were the important things that the em- charge.“Bigger and Betiei" is the erging ninth graders would use motto this year throughout their high school cour- year-s enrolment at 191 there is se and thence on througout their ^uite a reCord to beat.On Sunday lives. night, July 3, the special speaker As the waters of the Ottawa will be Rev David Tsutada of To-River wash the sands of beautiful kyo who has been called the John Campbell'* Bay on* down towards ^esley of japan the mighty St.Lawrence and then on to the oceans of the world, so would the influences of today's graduates have their effect with the passage of time, said Mr.Tre- Bible School Daily Vacation Bible School, under the auspices of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, will take place July 4 to July 9 this year.Rev.H A Smith of Ottawa will be in With last M i 'OL #E Mrs.James Carson Marks 89th Birthday > interest he urged Directors of the cartin Association to take a drive around some of the roads of Bristol Township and see for themselves some of the problems with which Coun- Acres.Vera Moorhead, Gail Letts oil ha* to deal Mayor Milliard Beattie was in- Peter Corrigan and Boyd Ebert, vited to make a few comments re- Forty five teachers and students garding some of the more press- were present, ing demands made in the Council The Mayor thanked the Associa- Griffiths*;
